Folzia: Dock City

Post by Null_1138 »

Not exactly my first map, but its the only one that's gotten to this stage.

Dock City is a city planted on the shore of a large lake, tucked away between two mountain ranges. It uses two means to travel and trade: air and sea, for which its landing platforms and docks accommodate.

I really used this map just to see what I could come up with aesthetically. The gameplay as it is right now is poor to say the least. That's where beta testers come in. This will be a closed beta, and there are 5 slots.

The biggest thing I want beta testers to look at is gameplay. How can the map be made more enjoyable by moving command posts around, paths, etc. Opinions on sides, ambiance, and mapping issues are also welcome. The results will help me determine what I need to do next.

To do:
- Finalize command post positions
- Paths/Planning
- Sides? (I would just be adding custom skins)

The map looks polished, but you can't tell much about the layout from just those screens, but the map looks sweet, and I would like to beta.

(btw the reskin of the kamino platforms looks really good)

I think some color changing could do a lot to make your environment feel a bit more unique. Right now, it's a rainy Naboo with background mountains. Try some modified textures on the buildings and mountains. A different color on the brick, some reshaped windows, or an entirely different material for the buildings would help out.

My thoughts exactly. You're off to a great start, but some different textures would be a welcome change, even if the changes are as simple as hue/saturation edits. Maybe a light grey for most of the brickwork with a more vibrant trim, such as bronze?

I'll volenteur for that, and and if you need custom sides I have some stock-esque ones nearly finished.

I feel like adding a few torches or street lamps with some unique light, maybe an orange or a greenish yellow would be interesting, and would liven up the map.

Thirded. IMO, the buildings kind of clash with the background color-wise, so a reskin and/or new textures should be used.

Thank you all for the comments, I'll get started on new building skins as soon as possible. :) I'll put up some screens when they are completed; for the beta, however, they'll be left as is.

And I have 5 beta testers:

- SilvaDalek
- THEWULFMAN
- martin105038
- Deathplayer
- Lagomorphia

Expect the beta tomorrow morning. Thank you all who offered their services!

The AI don't go...anywhere.

Things I thought of:

Remove both sets of gates to the Kamino platforms. If you want the AI to go the long way, path them the long way. Connect the platforms to the lower dock rather than the city.

Put a command post on the lower docks, and put the spawn points at the ends of the piers to encourage the AI down there.

I'd put the city command posts in the buildings rather than on the ground. That way the AI will use the streets to get to buildings, then attack them. The one with the balconies on all sides would be a great place for a command post, with turrets and snipers making the place like a fortress.

Light vehicles. For CW, AT-RTs and Dwarf Spider Droids are the ones I'd recommend. Maybe one or two IFT-Xs or AATs. For GCW, Imperial AT-RTs and rebel combat speeders (the BF1 ones). An AT-ST would be good, and FragMe's AT-PT wouldn't be out of place when it's done.

Turrets! Fortify the command posts.

Pathe the whole city right up to the wall and wall the whole city. Put a command post on the platform overlooking the inland gate.

A new sky. Kashyyyk: Docks sky isn't really the right one.

Needs a boundary.

Places I thought would make good command posts. Ignore the old ones on this picture.

I played your map and visually it looks nice, but the main issues are cp1 and cp2:

- they are too far away from cp0 and cp3

- there is only one way to get to these cps. You placed two bridges, but the doors are shut in one of them, so everyone goes through the same bridge (unless you jump, which gives you and advantage as AI doesn´t do it). Maybe you should open the doors so there are two paths to get there.

- the platforms where cp1 and cp2 are have no cover, so it´s a bit difficuly to get there, especially if your team is controlling the rest of the cps and all your enemies are spawning there. Maybe you could add some crates, barrels, or even a ship so they don´t look so empty and you have some cover.

Only one way to get to cps 1 and 2 definitely creates bottlenecks, and no cover makes it a shooting gallery, especially for snipers.

Another problem I found is that sometimes the AI spawns and stays still for a while, without doing anything. It might be a planning problem.

My suggestions:

- leave only one cp on the platforms. cp1 and cp2 look mostly the same, it makes it too repetitive. If you want, leave the empty platform just for decoration, with both doors shut.

- add at least one cp. Try to place it inside of a building, or on the first floor of any building.

- get one of the cps to the lower docks. That part of the city looks nice, but AI doesn´t go there so it´s a waste.

- visually, maybe you can make the textures look more white or pale, so that it looks like marble (I guess it´s a rich city).

- add health and ammo droids (I haven´t found anyone)

- if you add vehicles like Lagomorphia suggested, do it only for one era (maybe CW). Leave the other era without vehicles.

I´ll play it again during the weekend and tell you if I find something else. Great work

It's a vehicle map or it isn't.

Not really. Utapau has vehicles, I have played it online without any vehicles and I like it anyway. It was just a different option to play the same map.
