Skinning Droids [Solved]

Post by IronJaw »

I was looking for the .tga file for the droids, but all I could find where some almost-totally-transparent skin looking .tgs for the droids. (green, red, blue, etc.) Any thoughts?

Image

p.s. with it uploaded on a dark background it looks O.K...... sorta.... All you really can see on GIMP is a slightly redder area for the red stripes, and a ghostly grayer looking area every so often for the rest of the skin.

I am a graphic designer, what is exactly what you wish to do ?
Remember the alfa, that can be transparency or shine, if you have a full shine/transparency skin and you want to edit it, for easy manipulation of the skin remove the alfa and edit it, the return the alfa, for only one section on the skin edit it and then use the eraser tool but dont do it a full, use opacity scale at the left.

I mean that when I open the .tge file on GIMP I can't see anything. The origanal .tga file is to transparent. Practically invisible.

I had that too, But i had another program that could open it so, i saved it as a tga, rle compression on. Then opened it in Gimp, clicked save as, tga, then overite and turn off rle compression. It then will be totally visible, unlike that. The program i used is InfranView, it is free, small image opener exporter viewer etc.

Thats how i did it, very simple.

It even makes the file size smaller but still with rle compression off so it works!

This is a shortcut, but it is a bad way to do it, however, because you are completely stripping it of its alpha texture. You will want it to have its original alpha layer so that it looks correct ingame.

Ends up That I have a newer version of Gimp, so after following his directions, I could only go fron invisible, to totally fine, but not back to invisible.

Yes the instructions are for an older version of GIMP, but if you do it correctly, the alpha will still be saved. You must have just accidentally deleted it along the way.

I doubt it. I was very careful not to ever interfere with the original file. It might be farther down the list, or in another file. I'll give it a look when I have time.

That's because they changed the location of "decompose." It's now in "Colors->Components->Decompose."

I found that out, but I couldn't turn it from visible, to transparent. I tried both ways, but nothing. Does it really need to be semi transpiration to function properly? I set the droid skin as the skin for the Jet Trooper, and it functioned fine. It wasn't pretty, but it worked.

Without the alpha layer your model will be completely specular/shiny.

you dont really need to decompose and all that, theres a faster way. go to colors>levels>alpha and slide the black arrow all the way to the right, then slide the white one back over when you are done editing. you can atleast see it clearly like that, it may/may not make it shiny without re-composing, etc.

I'll try that! Also, if you Munge a map with "rep" selected, then again with "cis" selected. Would both sides have the custom skins, even though they where Munged separately? Also there are two versions of the clones. Phase I, and Phase II armor. How do I select the Phase I to be used?

...which is exactly why the tutorial above is what you should do. As we already went over, there are shortcuts, but they are sloppy and will not yield proper results.

right..i guess that shortcut is used more for adding them rather than removing them.

Change the layer to conquest and then move them like any other object. (Don't forget to move the spawn paths and capture regions too) That question has been answered many times before, so if you need more information, use the search.
