To see how many poly's these models are using.

To me, it looks like you're using MeshSmooth a bit too much, like I used to do.

They probably are using it a bit too much. I'd expect i and possibly you, would have used it too much, because XSI was manual when it came to smoothing, so having an easy way to do it, would make you just want to use it loads, no manual.. The Fighter is about 2000ish polys. The Battleship about 9000, and the Carrier under 4000.

Some practices, mainly not smoothing, and engines on the wings.

No, got stuck on the wings, might try the same thing in 3ds, the eclipse shape is a lot easier in that.

Gmax isn't bad, just a pain in the rear end at texturing

Lol, I get by. You just have to manually unwrap the mesh. Sometimes I even physically unwrap the model, then use a morph modifier to put it back to it's original shape, after applying a uv map of course. So that way you have the uv coordinates of the exploded mesh, but have the form of the original one.

*All I want for xmas is 3ds max*

3ds max is easier for some people, as XSI is easier to understand for other people, as are Maya. Despite that Maya and 3ds will soon blend into 1 (or Maya will blend into 3ds max - it already took some huge first steps into that direction in the version 8).

3ds is oldest, and can most likely more than the rest can, if you know how to. The difference is that the other programs is focussing on making these complex techniques easier to get to and understand. (interface, localization/naming etc.)

If you don't get it, you don't get it. End of story unless you're stubborn and willing to learn.

Well, I do have to agree with all the points Qdin made, but the fact remains that.....

3ds Max and Maya are the industry-leaders in 3d.
