KOTOR-BF2 Mod: Peragus II: Mining Colony

Post by Maveritchell »

Of all the map ideas explored at Gametoast, quite frankly, I'm surprised such a map has not been made before. Sure, we have the upcoming Mandalorian Wars mod, and there have been mods made based on worlds shown in Knights - Dantooine in one of the RotE maps, Korriban, at least once, to the best of my knowledge.

But never has there been a map set in Knights of the Old Republic. This map sets out to change that.

---------------------------------------------------

As anyone who has played KOTOR II will know, the player starts out (after a short cutscene) in a bacta tank in a mining facility near a remote, mining-ravaged world, Peragus II. The player wakes up to find rogue mining droids attacking him and all the miners missing...

...But suppose you'd not been unconscious for quite as long? Suppose the player wakes up before the droids' "mining protocols are set to mine organics?" Suppose you change the fate that befell the Peragus II facility...

---------------------------------------------------

This map features a custom miner side, aided by the Jedi Exile:

...against a custom mining droid side, aided by a tempermental "protocol" droid named HK-50:
Image
Weapons the miners use include, obviously, mines:
Image
...ion grenades, mining lasers, and ion blasters:
Image
The Jedi Exile knows the following force powers: Burst of Speed, Energy Resistance, Disable Droid, and Blaster Deflection:
Image
The mining droids are equipped with frag grenades, blasters, flamethrowers, and carbonite rays:
Image
And lastly, HK-50 has a special overload attack that kills anyone within a 25-meter radius - friend or foe.
Image
Some other pictures include one of the new models for the map, the corridors:

And a preliminary layout of the level, drawn through the second area:

Credit goes out to WideBoy, who has made and is making models for the interior (above corridor = his), to Teancum for sending me the vibrosword model and Vyse for creating it, as well as to PvtParts, who designed the mine effect.

There is a great deal of work to be done on the project, and in light of seeing other projects attain a great deal of collaboration, I would love for as many GTers to help create this as possible. There is still a great deal of modeling to be done for the interior - and to anyone that wants to help, ingame shots can be provided (still or motion). Additionally, something that would greatly improve the realism of this map would be getting a working unit model (+ animations) of a basic mining droid:
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Mk1_drd.jpg
The B-2 Battledroid is good enough for the Mining Droid Mk II, but all the other mining droid variations use the above shape. I'd prefer not to fall back on using a droideka for them.

Anyone that wishes to help, you can message me or post here, and, as always, please, suggestions ++ and criticisms ++. Thanks!

I like the idea of the map. Seeing as how you are already using my Vibro Sword model I suppose I have already helped out on the map. :P

Oh my word, I knew I forgot one of the credits. I thought it was Teancum's, though? No matter, you can both get credits. ;)

My apologies on the lack of accreditation and compliments on the model.

I always wondered where that vibroblade came from...nice job, Vyse! And I like the look of the map so far, Maveritchell. The model of the hall way you have looks just like the Kotor one!

the screens look nery vice, but what is "Burst of Speed" ? The sprint attack already is rather fast, so a Jedi's speed doesn't have to be represented by a force power.
I hope that this is not the final skin of the hallway, because it's basically crap the way it is now.
Anyway, this map has an enormous potential. I'd download it just because of the new weapons (carbonite ray, ion blaster).

The fun thing about the carbonite ray, other than doing damage, of course, is this: There's no way by which Battlefront can do a "slowing-down" of a unit (short of just reducing it's running energy). The carbonite ray gets around this by having its impact explosion be one that takes more processing power than a normal explosion. Thus, the target lags, and consequently "slows down."

Not the best solution, possibly, but it makes for an interesting effect.

As for the mining droid animation, perhaps you could do the same trick Vyse did with the Zelda "boss spiders" in his map? Don't ask me how he did it though, I just know it works :P and you would still need a model.

The "Burst of Speed" and "Blaster Deflection" were powers in the game that, respectively, let the P.C. run faster and deflect blaster bolts without a lightsaber. They're nothing more than names I gave to the already-existing abilities of any Jedi character to do a sprint attack and block. I named them only to keep in the mindset of being true to the game.

And no, that's definitely not the final skin of that corridor. ;) As the map progresses, we may upload some of the preliminary skins and let anyone who wants to submit skins for them. This can also apply to any of the skins shown in the pictures above and the pictures to follow. If anyone thinks that the skin isn't up to scratch, just tell me, and I'll send the skin to be modified. I'd personally like this, especially for the Jedi Exile skin, which seems sloppy to me, and for the Sullustian skin, which just didn't turn out as well as I like.

Also, anyone with ideas as to movesets for any of the mining droids, Mk 1, Mk 2, Excavator, and Fire Suppressant: I'm having a tough time nailing down unique movesets. I know that I want the excavator droids to have a flamethrower (they do ingame) and the fire suppressants to be equipped with the carbonite ray, but beyond that, I've not got many more ideas than just blasters and grenades.

OH! One thing I forgot to mention in the first post! Anyone with any modeling experience could do this, for a huge credit in the map, and without a huge amount of work: I need a T3-model droid model. Anyone who's ever played Knights would know it, or you could Wookiepedia T3-M4. I'd like to make a T3-Unit for the miner side (as there were T3-Units seen in the mining colony) and equip it with a droid shock arm. I've already tested adding in a droid unit with the R2-D2 model, and as such I know I can, I just need the model and a preliminary skin (I've never worked with just a UV map before) and I can take it from there. It doesn't have to have animations, just simply a model. Thanks to anyone that can!

EDIT: T3-Model droid info

If you want some accurate textures tell me and I'll extract off my KOTOR-tool.

I'm not sure copyright laws would allow you to use those textures, but if so, then that's as accurate as you'd get.

No, that's illegal, Darth_Maul...

Or not. This one of the most furiously debated topics in almost all modding/mapping communities. For example, some people extracted WoW models and put them into Warcraft 3 - 50% of them were banned, the other 50% were celebrated as heroes and innovators.

Here's my stance on it, and the one that will be used for this project: I firmly believe in adherance to the law, and, if I have any doubt about whether something is illegal or not, I don't dabble in shades of gray - I just won't do it.

If, sometime down the road, once the models get finished, I need textures, I will certainly consider asking for any help you can give: but only insofar as using KOTOR's textures for examples. It's not so critical that I nail it down to the pixel so long as it is easily recognizable as from Knights, and so that it doesn't detract from the playing experience. I doubt anyone will be playing the games side-by-side anyway.

It breaks the EULA. We just can't discuss stuff like this in public, so please don't. End of KotOR texture discussion.
