Freelancer: Worth Buying?

Post by Raptor522 »

I've been eyeing the PC game Freelancer for a bit now, but I haven't time to play the demo to it yet. But still, the demo would only tell you so much about the game. Does anybody here already own it and could possibly tell me if it's really worth getting? It looks great to me, and I like the whole idea behind the game (the whole "make-your-own-empire" thing), the graphics look good, and it seems to get high scores from a lot of people on Gamespot, but they've decieved me before.

A bit off topic: 2003 seemed to be a good year in video games...a lot of good one's came out that year...

Back on topic: So...yeah...

i actually have it. its pretty good, if you like that sorta thing (space combat sim/trading, etc). journeys can sometimes get a little tedious tho...that's probably my biggest problem with it.
also, the graphics are not bad, but not great either. i'm not sure what you mean by "make-your-own-empire", the game basically consists of 3 things - the story/campaign (which you more or less take at your own pace), generic side missions to "go here and kil people" for money, and trading for money. and of course, using that money to buy cool upgrades to your ship, or a whole new ship. there's also multiplayer, but i never bothered to try that, so i cant really offer an opinion there. from what i gather, its more of the same, except without the story, and with real people to fight against of course.

on the plus side, i do believe there are a number of mods for it, including several star wars ones. i haven't played in a while, tho, i would expect the number of mods has multiplied greatly since i last checked.

as to whether its worth buying, i would say that depends on the price. unless you really really like that type of game, i would say its not worth the standard $50. if you can get it for $30 (or perhaps $40 depending on how good it sounds to you), then i'd say go for it.

PS if you dont have time to play the demo, how are you gonna have time to play the whole game? :P

Off-topic : Moreover, Raptor', have you ever considered getting your hands down on either X²: The Threat or X³: Reunion ?...

Eh, the empire thing, the reputation, getting up in the world(s)...that's what I meant. Anyway, yeah, I find Space Combat Sims and that stuff very fun. When my mom drags me into Sams Club, they always have it. lol

Equally off topic: Yeah, I've seen those, but Freelancer seems to interest me more...label me strange, if you wish. lol

oh, the reputation thing...that basically controls who you can buy stuff from. accepting and completing a mission for one side improves your rep with them while decreasing it with their enemies. you can only buy stuff from people you have a positive rep with. and the pirate factions have the best ships and weapons iirc, but you start out on the "good guys" side, so you kinda gotta work your way over there. oh, and if you try to approach a station (or ship, obviously), associated with your enemy, itll attack you. i'm not sure, but you may still be able to land on it anyways, lol.

i noticed the x3 game in best buy one time, came home and investigated it, but something turned me off of it, i forget what tho. the graphics definitely looked better than fl's to me tho.

Off-topic : I guess you were referring to either the impressive amount of Controls present in X³: Reunion main Interface, or to the numerous Technical Issues listed in this Wikipedia Article, dreadlordnyax... Am I wrong ?

Now, now, Levy, let's not be getting off topic. LOL Sorry, couldn't resist.

Anyway, I played the demo for a while last night on my dad's computer (a friggin' good computer at that), and it was FUN AS CRAP. I'm not sure how long I play it, but I know I spent about 20-30 minutes flying around in the giant space cloud that surrounds the Ithaca Research Station (Someone liked reading The Odyssey, maybe ;)). I was randomly flying around for a bit, then I was dodging enemies while making my way out by following the White Giant star thingy. Flying around in that cloud was strangely fun. lol Maybe we could play online together at some point. After I get the full version, of course. lol

And the reason the graphics are better in than in Freelancer would probably be because it came out two years later. ;)

Off-topic : You are right, Raptor', but I do not consider that as a "major" Argument...
However, if you look at closely Microsoft Freelancer and EGOSOFT X³: Reunion Graphics, I'm sure you'll think that "Visual Evolutions" brought and exploited by this last video-game have incredibly increased in only "two years", compared to the first one I've mentioned above.
Moreover, a few Screen-Captures taken from X³: Reunion could even be used as Background - Intended to Microsoft Windows Desktop, for sample -, such as the following one :

Hm. I guess WHO makes the game matters more than WHEN...lol Whenever you reach level two in the demo, the thing automatically quits, so I'm still holding out for the retail...there's a mod that I saw a video for for Freelancer that looked really cool, especially since it pressed the fact that you could buy a TIE Defender. Really random. lol

Yep. That'd be it. lol Unless anyone else replies with something useful, I guess it'd probably be better for me to leave it be...at least until I get the game. ;)

Yay, I got the game! Yeah, Levy, I know how bringing old topics back to life is (at least, among the non-n00bish) shunned, but I finally got the game a few days ago, and I'm hoping that's a good enough reason for this one. :emp:

Ah, and I beat the campaign. I really wished they'd make a second one, where the Nomads came back. That would be AWESOME.

The Nomads were weird...and they have a thing for compinsation: The giant base that you have to get the energy source thingy from in under 9 minutes, the giant wall that could make the Death Star cry, and the massive shell thing around the base in that last part of the last mission. Wow this game is amazing...BUT YOU CAN'T JOIN THE FACTIONS!!! :'( Can you do that in Multiplayer? I wanna join the Rheinland Military...heh, you fight them for about half the game, and they're never considered an enemy. lol

Off-topic : You do not have to worry about this Lawful Detail, Raptor', as you are among GameToast members having mostly shared helpful and "constructive" elements towards the whole Community, and that's why I do not mind allowing you to bring back this thread to Life, which may equally force other Users of this Message-Board to respect local Rules in order to take advantage of the same Authorization as you...

well, you can buy a rheinland fighter, and go there and accept jobs from them and stuff, but as the title indicates, you're pretty much stuck as a mercenary, you don't technically "join" the factions. i'm not sure about multiplayer, but somehow i doubt it would be different.

but now that you've finished the campaign, you can explore all the mods out there ;)

Off-topic : Am I wrong, or have you indeed ever downloaded Modifications intended to Microsoft Games® Freelancer, dreadlordnyax ? If so, then I would be rather curious and interested in having a look at what you might propose to the whole GameToast Community, since it could then make the current thread even more helpful for members willing to get their hands down on the aimed Product...

Well, the mods mentioned on Lancer's Reactor and the Wikipedia Freelancer article are enough to keep me content for a looooooong time...lol I can't wait for that Halo mod to be completed...of course, that's like saying I can't wait for Halo 3 to be completed. ;)

That Star Wars mod's the first on my list to try out, and then I'm set on trying out that Phoenix RPG mod and server...hehe...

Off-topic : dreadlordnyax, thanks to the partial Descriptions you have made out of the Microsoft Games® Freelancer Modifications you had ever downloaded before losing any Track pointing to them, I have got my hands down on a few web-addresses that you should perhaps consult in order to tell me whether they remind something to you.
So, here you go :

Are you referring to Freelancer: Combat Evolved? To me it looks like an excellent mod, though it'll probably be a bit of a strain on my computer. It apparently takes advantage of Freelancer's graphics engine to make the most of it. That mod is one that I'm really looking forward to.

In my opinion, the best of the Star Wars mods for Freelancer is the mod called "Free Worlds" which is a total conversion (no original Freelancer systems, ships, factions or commodities) into the Star Wars universe. You can go to all of your favourite places from Star Wars and pilot tons of different ships, something like over 100, or is it 200 from Star Wars. They all have their own cockpits replacing the standard Freelancer ones, which is something I absolutely loved. It's definitely a mod worth checking out!

http://www.lancersreactor.com/t/ and search for Free Worlds.
