Sounds Question (Sorry if previously answered)

Post by Shao »

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums. I love the ideas behind Battlefront 2 including its gameplay, but one of the things I really didn't like was how some of the sounds are not authentic; namely certain character voices and object sounds.

I was browsing through the "Everything you need" post and it goes on about adding custom sounds to maps, but I'm not sure if that's the same as what I'm trying to do. Is it possible to overwrite specific sounds - for instance Luke's voice or the X-wing engine sounds in all of the space maps?

My modding experience comes from Quake-based games such as Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, so I'm used to the concept of overwriting specific sounds that all of the maps and games draw from. Is that how it works in Battlefront 2? Or does each map draw on sounds and it's in fact the maps themselves that must be edited?

To summarize, I just want to learn how to overwrite specific sounds completely, such as hero voices, weapon sounds, and vehicle sounds.

It's possible to change any set of sounds in the game, provided you know what sound .lvl files to overwrite. It's easiest to do in mod maps, because you have easy access to the map's .lua file, in which you can tell the map to look at a custom sound .lvl file.

To answer your last question, though - you could be doing overwrites to specific maps' sound .lvl files or to a common sound .lvl file. Both exist, and depending on what you want to edit, you might have to change one or the other or both.

I'd imagine character pain sounds, and space vehicle sounds would be in a common sound .lvl file and hero voices would be in a map-specific one. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Where do I go to get started checking that out? Or is that in the "Everything you need" thread?

Thanks again.

You want to look into Vyse's tutorial for adding new sounds. To do his method, you'll need to use the BF1 tools, but it's much easier (and quicker) using them than trying to work it with the BF2 tools.
