Movies I'm Looking forward to This Year

Post by SBF_Dann_Boeing »

Tons of really good looking movies are coming out this year, starting with Star Trek, which I already saw and really enjoyed (totally recommend going to see it if you haven't yet), so here's a list in no particular order of what I'm looking forward too:

1. Moon (June 12 US limited, July 17 UK, September 3 AUS)

I recently found the trailer to a movie coming out in a matter of weeks simply called "Moon." The story is of a guy who is working alone with a computer named GERTY for three years at a mining station on the moon. Towards the end of his three year job strange things start happening...

Something things about this movie you should take note of:

Not only does this look like an awesome sci-fi, but it is not 1. A Remake 2. A Book/Comic/TV to Movie Production or 3. A Sequel, which comprise most sci-fi movies these days. So this movie is actually some relatively ORIGINAL material, (though it has obvious influences from the classic sci-fi film, 2001, which is not a bad thing), rather than the recycling of movie scripts.

I am Definitely Looking forward to it.

2. Land of the Lost (June 5 US, June 11 AUS, July 31 UK)

This is a comedy/sci-fi starring Will Ferrell (automatically making it a must-see in my opinion) and is based on an old weird 70's TV show. Basically Ferrell is a Park Ranger/Scientist named Rick Marshall who inadvertently creates a time machine and is sucked in through a time...and space...vortex...back to a time...slash place...where...things are different

Trailers:

http://www.hulu.com/watch/56872/movie-t ... f-the-lost

Looks hilarious...and I've yet to dislike a Will Ferrell movie...

3. The Road

This is your basic post apocalyptic sci-fi struggle movie. It is based on a book of the same name by the author who wrote No Country for Old Men. It's not really too original, though it looks interesting enough:

4. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (July 6 UK, July 15 US & AUS)

Well it's Harry Potter, so for me it's worth a watch, seeing as I've seen all the movies so far and read all the books and was relatively pleased with most of them. From the trailer this seems like an improvement over the last, though you can never tell from the trailer.

Trailers:

Featurette:

5. Where the Wild Things Are (October 16 US, Oct. 23 UK, December 3 AUS)

I've already devoted an entire topic to how awesome this movie might be, so I won't go into detail about my anticipation for this.

http://www.hulu.com/watch/64652/movie-t ... things-are

6. 9 (September 9 US, no dates released UK and AUS)

Mainly my friends are interested in seeing this. It's apparently based on an awesome short film that I haven't seen. The trailer looks cool so I'll probably go see it.

Reminds me a bit of Wall-E...

You have basically said everything I was going to say about that movie. Word by word.
That makes this post equivalent to a simple "QFT" but uhh... whatever.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Maybe it is a sci-fi sequel, but it looks to be a lot better than the last one. Darker plot, 60 robots, more character development on the robots, waht appears to be a better plot, and a LOT more action. I can't wait till June 24th.

Well, that Moon one looks interesting. I like the robot.

9 looks really good too. Yay originality!

And I also going to see Up (though I have my doubts) and I'm pretty sure the latest Miyazaki comes out in August.

Moon looks really cool. The computer reminds me of HAL.

I'm definitely looking forward to Transformers and Harry Potter (Though, with the latter, the cut/changed content will probably annoy me, as usual :P).

I thought it was coming next year...?

Edit: Wikipedia says:
Avatar is an upcoming 3-D science fiction film directed by James Cameron, due to be released on December 18, 2009.
Ok then, almost next year. Anyway, I'm a huge fan of Cameron, loved all of his movies, good to see him making another one.

Can't wait for Harry Potter to come out soon. I was really pissed off when I found out that they moved the release date just for the cash. Oh well, can't have everything.

I never read the book, but other people have told me it's good (and rather disturbing). From what I understand of the basic plot of the book, it seems like it would transfer over to a movie fairly well.

They were originally meant to release it in July of last year, but I guess they didn't want to have to compete with The Dark Knight (or so I've heard).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to that as well as the new Transformers (though they had better use the original theme this time...)

Another movie that might be interesting is District 9. Don't know that much about it, but Peter Jackson is involved :D .

A couple friends of mine just went to see that today...and heard odd things about it. Overall it was apparently a great film, as most pixar films are, though, according to them, had some very dark material in it that most kids wouldn't pick up on, which makes me more interested in it now, as that was not at all evident by the trailer.

It wasn't dark. It had some emotional depth but "dark" is a misnomer.
