Modeling a weapon, for the first time (Solved) Thanks!

How to create models in XSI and other 3D applications and make them work in Battlefront 1 & 2. Post models, tips for application usage and share anything XSI, 3DMax, SketchUp, etc.

Modeling a weapon, for the first time (Solved) Thanks!

Post by ColonelKlink »

Okay, a while back, I asked about what program you needed to model a gun, and XSI modtools 7 was recommended. I asked if Xsi modtools 6.01 was fine, and they said it works the same. I have finally got around to actually starting a modeling project. Because this is new, I don't really know what I need to do to create a model, and make it work. So if you guys would be kind enough, could you talk me through this? In the order that you do it? I was thinking of making a revolver, like the ones with the rotation barrel, and a round shaft.
NOTE!!! I do know some of the buttons on the XSI interface, like the transform, rotate, and size buttons, I just need a person to talk me through what I need to do.

Okay, thanks!!! I'll get reading right away!!
What type of weapon did you make? pistol? rifle?
EDIT,
I think I might have a problem. I clicked render, then preview, as it says in the tutorial, but when I tried to view it again after some changes, the render view pops up, but the object is not there!!! Is this an error?

Yeah, I did. In the explorer window, I selected my cubes, and cylinders, and clicked render/preview, and it worked for the first time. After moving the camera around a little bit, I did the same thing, and the preview window popped up, but the screen was black. At the bottom, it says "rendering... 100%". Is there something I need to set up? A certain mode I have to be in? Or is preview a one time deal, because it's free?

Cool Lightsaber by the way!! Reversed Lightsabers are sooo coool!!

Okay, open the explorer window. From there, right click a object you have, and go to properties, viewing. Make sure Render Visibility is checked. Do this for every object you want seen. :D

I just figured that out like yesterday

Hmmmmmmmmm........
I did that too, but it only showed once. Is there some window you have to be in? Like camera mode?
Or do the cubes and cylinders have to be in a polymesh? or something like that?
What render/preview do you hit? on the left side of the panel I click RENDER (out of the five other options, model, animate, render, simulate, and hair) and then go to preview near the bottom. Is this right?
Also, is there ANYTHING else, besides clicking in explorer mode and render visibility, that you have to do?
So far what I have done is...
1. Added 3 cubes, and 2 cylinders, and changed their shape a little.
2. Clicked Render Visibilty in the explorer window for each unit.
3. (this was my first step actually) made a null called MS3DSceneRoot.
I can't think of anything else I have done. This has happened with my other models too I have tried to make.
It sounds like I have a bad copy?
I guess I can still get around this though right? I just can't preview it, which might be bad, cause I can't fine tune it.
One more thing, I saved it as the file type .exp, that was the default file save. Is this causing it to screw up? Thanks for your help!!

Render/preview/all layers.(Make sure all of your objects are selected) That should do it. Also, just save it as the default .scn file. :D

Ah, this is really getting frustrating.....I am getting pretty angry at myself. I don't think I am doing anything wrong.
And my default save file isn't .scn it is .exp. I look up different file types, and it only shows "all files" and ".exp"
Is it because I am using Mod Tools 6? Is there an error with this particuar version?
And I just about finished the model, at least the basic part, barrel, trigger, shaft, handle (though it could use work) and the that thing that goes click and makes the bullet shoot....so now I am double frustrated cause I can't see it.
I do have Mod tools 4.2, but I need activation key to save. Is there a way that I could make my revolver a file type that Mod tools 4 could open? I tried making my file a Scene file, and it says its a "XSI Scene" file, but when I put it in modtools 4 and tried to open it, it wouldn't work. It says "revolver.......could not be opened"
Oh, and is there a button called "all layers"? I am pretty sure you mean, select all the cubes, and cylinders, but I could be wrong.

Oh!! I'm useing XSI foundation 5.1 : http://www.gametoast.com/forums/viewtop ... 36&t=22345
I say just save your current model to the desktop, and export it to XSI..
And yes, i'm doing Render/preview/all layers.

I could post a picture of the revolver, to let you see it and decide if I should export it yet, but how do you post a picture? I know it is pretty square, and not very cool looking, but for a first try........

If you just look at a textured or texture decal version of the model with and without headlight on that is pretty close to what you would see in game. You don't really need to do the render preview.
