out of interest how much would it cost to make a small star wars game that you could sell ?

takin into account buying the permission ,an engine (or some1 to make 1 for you) etc.

Also (and this is my main interest)....

What would i need to do to create my own game? (eg. non star wars) I have no knowledge of how to create an engine but i would love to make a FPS someday ... that i could sell over the net .

maybe in weekly/monthly installments or episodes .

I ask this cos , well id love to do it and i have been making a story up for about the last 2 years for a book i was gonna write ...but if i could make it into some sort of game ...EVEN BETTER!

This came around from reading Tolkiens LOTR's 2 years ago. You could say I was Inspired.

PS . I am deadly serious about this ,so any help/info would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Well i´m realy not sure about correct prices but think about 100.000 $ to use a current game engine and another 100.000 dollar for the StarWars franchise just to put the name starWars in your gametitle. and i´m pretty sure that Lucasarts will get some money too for each sold copy .
But i won´t think that LA would allow you to create another FPS beside the Battlefront series.

Edit:
so Quake2 engine should be free at http://www.idsoftware.com
this one is free: http://www.thexengine.com/
http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net free and opensource

Don´t know if they are all meant to be made for FPS (i just googled a bit)

Edit2: you can license the Quake2 for commercial use for about 10.000 $ wich is realy cheap because for the Quake3 engine you need to pay 250.000$ http://www.idsoftware.com/business/technology/

The quake 3 engine is actually free now, until you actually need a liscence. (I.E. Star Wars)

so far i understand (having read that much) the quake engines are only free for noncommercial use. If you want to sell your games you need a license you have to pay for.

Neat Bandu; I was actually considering the same thing myself (no kidding), until I realized by the time I modeled/skinned/built everything that it would be obsolete.

Good luck with your own game.

Quake 3 really isnt used much... Try the unreal 2 engine... http://www.unrealtechnology.com/html/li ... port.shtml

the only problem is getting that license. It would cost some money but I dont know that for a fact.

However, I would suggest instead of making a new game make a Total Conversion. It would be simpler and cost little to no money at all. It could combine all the aspects you want but eaiser to make. If you want to go that route then again I would suggest the Unreal Engine. However you would use the Unreal ED. (very simple) and lots of tutorials are available for creating mods and TCs. Since the code and everything are pre-built so you just model and other.

if you want to see what Unreal 2004 TCs can look like then here some sites of all great TCS

and of course the awinspiring Star Wars TC
