Post by BadWolf »

Hi, ive just got star wars battlefront 2 yesterday, and ive been having a problem, some sort of jittering, low fps or lagg after about the second match(or a period of time). i can play fine for alittle while, no drop or anything, no problems, but after that, the fps goes very low, and even if i do exit, the menus are laggy too. appreciate any help given.

I get this problem as well from time to time. I suggest that you just exit battlefront and restart it, that always works for me. :)

Make sure you don't have Fraps or related software recording video while you're playing.

i cant keep doing that, because it would just be to painful for my lan parties with my brother and his friends.

and i dont have any fraps or recording software, so thats not the problem, no mods, nothing, just a stock install and thats what happens.

I experienced this problem for the longest time, Battlefront was pretty much unplayable after the first round. It was fixed after I installed more RAM. How much RAM do you have, and what type is it? (DDR, SD, DDR2, DDR3)

DDR, 1gb ram. but it plays fine until it gets to like the half way though the second match then it starts going slow. GC is good though, i can play though that constant and it doesnt lagg(tried for a hour anyway)

other specs are:
CPU AMD 1.8gb
GPU nivida 9400 force gt
windows XP home edition SP3

1 Gig nowadays is pushing it for running some programs. If you call up task manager and look at available memory you'll probably see that 1/3 to 1/2 is taken up by windows and any other programs you may have running in the background. Also some programs don't always "flush" memory between maps so the longer you go the more the computer has to page out making it slower.

My brother had a similar problem running L4D2 to the point where his character would freeze and he couldn't move anywhere. he upped his memory to 4 Gig (max for XP and his machine) and now he can run the game with absolutely no lag at all.

Getting money for more memory can be difficult for some but it probably help you out a lot.
And hey it is Christmas and I think Santa is still taking requests.

Yep, buy yourself a bit more RAM and you'll see a major difference. If you double it or more it'll really show.

Do you know what kind of motherboard you have? If you can at least tell me the model number and company name, I can find you an amazing deal on the best possible RAM upgrade you can get. :)

EDIT:

If you don't know how to find this information, download and install CPU-Z. Once you have CPU-Z installed, run it and take a screenshot of the program's window with each tab open, e.g., a screenshot with the "CPU" tab, then one with the "Caches" tab, following one with the "Mainboard" tab open, etc.

Another good thing to note, is that nowadays RAM is (relatively speaking) cheap. At most it should not put too much of a dent in your pocket. Depending on how much you get and the brand you need, it should be in the $20-$90 range. I've seen 16GB for $90, and 8GB for $40. Brand name varies in quality and price. Marth can help figure out the kind you should get.

My 3GBs is more than enough for most games, and I run SWBF2 very smoothly at high settings, so that's a good number to shoot for. Even one more GB would help, like Tean said, double or more.

Or you can just go to Start -> Run and type in DXdiag. That brings up all system specs which you can then dump to a text file.

By the way, you can get 1GB sticks of DDR1 for ~20-25 USD. You just need to be sure your system can handle memory that big. It sounds rather... old. (No offense, been there).

Yes, but DirectX Diagnostics doesn't list the motherboard's information, as far as I remember. The reason I need to know his motherboard's model and developer is so I can figure out what RAM clock frequency his motherboard supports; if he attempts to install memory that has a clock freq. higher than what his motherboard supports, the RAM and/or motherboard could potentially become severely damaged.

While technically true, I haven't heard of an instance of that in years and years. The BIOS simply runs the memory at either the lowest clock speed of slowest chip or at the max speed the mobo can handle. Still, I'm more of a shoot-from-the-hip guy, so I take risks.

You have to upload images to somewhere like ImageShack, or into your Dropbox to share them.

What is the dropbox, and where can i find it?

PS. Is this problem all because bf2 doesnt have some type of dump file? because ive never had problems like this with anyother game(eg. Fallout 3, freelancer, jka, arma, crysis, EAW, WOT, Mount and blade warband, Wolfenstein and numours games)

Don't rule out heat problems either; You may open up your case and check to see if the gpu has a lot of dust on it or that the fan can't spin because of dust. One of my LAN buds was having problems with the frame rate dropping down into the low single digits, so we opened his case up and saw that his gpu fan was caked with dust and refused to spin. So that might be your problem too.

If a gpu gets too hot it'll severly lower it's power output, to try and keep things cool. Hence why your framerate may drop. I'd chalk this problem up to the lack of RAM, but don't rule heat problems out.

ah alright, thanks for the tips, il have a closer look at the fan when i have time to pull it apart. but this is the first game ive seen this happen to, i've played more advanced games(even SC2) and ive never had problems like this.

If you can play other games just fine then don't even bother. I guess I took this as a universal problem you were having hahaha :P
