Help! Munging's not working anymore!

I'm actually rather embarrassed that I have to ask about this. I've made maps on and off for the last year, so it isn't a n00b problem (at least I hope not!) I just decided to start modding again with all the wonderful models out. I picked up where I left off with a map from a couple months ago. I edited it, munged it, ran it, and the first thing I noticed was the localization was off (in the map menu.) I go to run it and it crashes. My first thought was I messed up and I had to fix it. But then I tried a different map and it had the same problem. Finally I started from scratch and didn't even open the map in ZE and it still had the same problem. I uninstalled mod tools, uninstalled BFII. Reinstall everything, munge a brand new map (without opening it in ZE) and it STILL has the same problem! The munge error is the same " ERROR[levelpack shell.req]:Input file shell.req does not exist. [continuing]". I have the DVD version, and since the problem occurs with everymap, I haven't bothered using the server trick to get the log file. Has anyone else came across this? More importantly, does anyone know howto fix this? Thanks

your just missing shell.req go in to data and copy it in to your maps folder (C:bf2_modtools/data and data abc

I never had to do that before...I guess my big question then is; after a year of having it on my computer and not moving the folders or anything, why did it stop working? And why would it affect EVERY map, including ones started from scratch?

...Upon further scrutiny I discovered that while it was munging, it came up with "Munging xxx.req
Munging xxx.req
The system cannot find the path specified.
The system cannot find the path specified."
I believe this is the root of the problem. However, map xxx is a brand new map, not even opened in ZE. And I had uninstalled and reinstalled mod tools. So what's happening? Why is the map REQ not showing up?

Disregard that "system cannot find the path specified" thing. It really is munging the req, but there is some odd bug in the application in that it says it doesn't. It always shows up for EVERYONE. Just desregard it.

Wait, you have the DVD version? That's.....too bad then. I heard (I think) that mods don't work on the DVD version, or maybe it was the bf2log? Maybe both, but still, this is something that's a problem.

You're thinking of bf2log. Trust me, mod tools *have* worked on my DVD copy (check Hypori: Jedi Rescue ;)) There is a way to get the log by installing the server client, running the map, checking the resulting log, etc. But I'm too lazy at the moment to install the client, especially since it happens on all maps right now and it probably won't have the answer...Thanks though.

Hmm, shell.req. Yeah, I'd copy it like trog(dor?) said it. Is the Shell folder in your data_XXX folder? It probably shouldn't be in there. What do ya need it for anyway?

You guys do realize that "shell.req" is a sound req file, and only has info about sound. This file has no information on, say, localization or textures or anything like that. It's possible you're both thinking of "xxx.req", which has all the load details for the map (and happens to be right where it should be.) And again, this doesn't answer the question about why it happens to every map, and why it just started acting up...Keep the ideas coming!

Are you munging Shell in VisualMunge? Don't. The files are freaked up like a chicken on crack, so don't even bother with it if you are munging it. All I can say is maybe you didn't munge something yet. Maybe Common? A side?

1.1 patch? LOL I actually DID after I reinstalled last night :oops: I figured that one out pretty quickly. But that was still before I posted this topic. phazon_elite, that's not the case. I munge everything the same as I always have. I tried only munging individual parts to see if I could locate the problem but to no avail. And remember, it USED to work.
There is still one thing in the munge output that I don't remember seeing before. "'xcopy' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file." Now it's very possible that I just never noticed it before, but it does look suspicious...

Maybe it's not the shell. It might be the LUA, odfs, req's, missing mode req's, addme, models, textures, or you're missing something in the mission.req.

That should be a non issue with a new map started from scratch without any modding. It was created then munged. that's it.

well I'm out of ideas except one: use the server trick to get the log. It's the only way now.

shell.req is not needed unless you're completely redoing the UI. Mod maps don't need it.

In case it matters, when it tries to load, it gets all the way to the 11th red dot before crashing. Since it affects every mod map I munge and at very least the localization, wouldn't it be a problem with visual munge? Has anyone had problems with visual munge like this? Remember I just did a fresh install last night...

You don't ever stop munges, do you? If you do, clean then re-munge.

Also, can you please try the server trick to get the log? You need to know what the problem is. We can't help you any further now.

Ok, you need something from tur.lvl. Find that odf and munge! Shell couldn't have caused the crash since I always get rid of the sound shell and it works fine.

That isn't the problem. There is a corruption in one of the main files of whatever map that is either generated by visualmunge or is being misread by BFII. Either way, it's not a byproduct of the map itself. Like I have said many times, this happens to every map, whether it be brand new or one that's been sitting on the HD for 6 months...I guess I can try uninstalling and reinstalling AGAIN.
