Totally Lost....Binocular Laser Painting?

Alright guys, this is another one of those "I don't even know where to start" threads.

I want to give the Binoculars (which I have working) a primary fire, shooting a laser (if in order to paint an area you have to fire a msh, I will use the grenade, such as seen in Majin's Outpost Overrun map), which will then designate an area for an orbital strike (which I have working).

As you can see from my (which I have working)'s, I have the key parts done, I just need to tie them together.

So, to recap, I want my binoculars to designate a point, whether with a laser, object, or other class entity, to call an orbital strike on.


I just need some pointing in the right direction..and I'll be on my way.

(I know Teancum was talking about doing something very similar to this, but I never heard if the laser pointing works..hence mentioning the firing of a msh, which I know works).

Im really tired, so I hope this makes sense,

Hmm. You could try making the 'laser' be just a trail for the pointer.
If you make an invisible ordinance to begin with it would look just like only the trail was painting a spot, if that's what your looking for.
(BTW, what'd you do to get orbital strike working?)

Yeah. But I need more technical help, as in, how would I make the pointer be fired, and then call an orbital strike at its landed (if its msh)/connecting (if its laser) position?

And as for getting the orbital strike working, I couldn't tell ya. But I do recall that it was never broken really, just people were overthinking it and messing it up. If you want, I can send you the orbital strike odfs/recon droid (with secondary fire orbital strike). Or actually I'll just post em up here, but once again, its only if you want em.

Also, another question just popped into my head: Is it possible to restore recon droid movement when it calls for an orbital strike/self-destruct or whatever?

Im sure it is, as the orbital strike isnt hard coded into the game, so whatever command would do this would be in an odf. That is, unless the Recon Droid is hard coded...

Any input?

My advice:

iMake a muzzle flash effect in the particle editor, (work at it and it will look like a beam or use the existing beam, no guarentees on that one having not looked at the FX) that is the laser beam and make the beacon no geometry, no light, no trail effect, no gravity, fast speed, low lifetime (the strike happens a little after the beacon expires)

Oh, my mistake, I'm having the same problem as you. I can get it working, it's just the whole beacon problem right?

Alright I'll look into it. I decided to take a bit of a break so i'll get back to you soon, but not today.


Edit: just thought of this. If I take it one step at a time its not so daunting. Give your unit a rocket launcher, and make the ord a grenade sort thing. make it stick to everything, and give it a super high velocity so you cannot see it when it shoots.

Once I get the beacon-shooter down, it'll take me 5 minutes to plug in the orbital strike.

But as I said, im cant work on it write now. So tomorrow i'll try this whole thing out..
