Getting a trojain off with files still on. *Problem Solved*
My Gaming-Homework-great, NYC computer was infected with a trojan. Diet Dr. Pepper. When i start my computer back up, it says i need to reinstall something. Is there a way where i can getmy computer back to normal but save most of my data (iTunes, AOL, SW, LOTR)?

First, see if you can find what trojan it is. Look on the internet for the symptoms you are experiencing or run an updated virus scan to see if it flags it and post here. I know a way, but it does depend on the trojan. My way might be a waste of time if it is in the registry.

First of all run your computer in safe mode and do a system restore...
Not sure if that will solve the problem, but could be

Thing about the system restore is the possibility of planting itself in the registry before it was actually noticed. You would be just restoring the prob. That's why I need to know what type it is to walk him through it. It could be as simple as a system restore or as complicated as removing entries from the registry, find five or six system protected hidden files (one exe, a few dlls, and one updater that will put the trojan back on when removed), and removing those system restores. They can be nasty little bugers.

moncal', if I were you, I would equally download a few Emsi Software© Products - Since I have noticed most of them owned a Potential which can be aggregated to any Antivirus Software commonly widespread - from this web-page, such as a-squared (a²) Free, amongst others. Moreover, in case your current Antiviral Solution would either have expired or simply become "useless", then I assume download and install SOFTWIN BitDefender 8 Free Edition, or even try out a Demonstration Version of Microsoft® Windows Live OneCare from this URL, would be highly needed...

I would be able to get the trojain off easily using system restore. Normally my Norton Internet Security 2006 protects me from everything and i havent gotten any viruses/trojains/syware/etc. but this is the first that is causing problems.
I cant start windows. Here is the Problem, wht it says because i cant start windows.
Windows could not start because the floowing file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\System32\config\system
Sounds like a major problem.
Just a question, do they keep spreading and infecting my computer even when my computer is turned off?

Alright, moncal', as I must have already precised inside previous messages, Google© - Or any other Meta Search Engine - is one of your most "valuable" Knowledge Base across the whole Web, and exploiting its full Potential could have helped you to get your hands on a few relevant Microsoft® Articles, among which you could consider one as being more helpful than all others, freely consultable thanks to this web-address...

Off-topic : I assume you have voluntarily aspired to evaluate our possible interest regarding the Personal Computer you would be ready to exchange with an equivalent one, moncal', and now we are at it, I would be rather curious to obtain more informations about the concerned "customized" Microsoft® Windows Platform, additionally to the Company having assembled it, if you do not mind this Request...

I wish I had looked at this thread before now... You never need to replace an entire computer based on a simple missing file. You had no hardware problems and all software problems can be fixed. While the steps to fix it may seem complex, its still just a simple computer problem and can be fixed. Though if its a free replacment, I guess there isn't much harm. Did you get your data backuped before you sent the computer in?
