ANNOUNCING: The Battle of Alderaan (three WIPs)

Post by Schizo »

Figured I'd break the news to you guys. I've just started work on a set of maps, all set on the planet of Alderaan. Yeah, you heard me; Alderaan. I figured it was about high time someone got to work on it, so I'm going to be the first person to attempt (or at least make) an Alderaan map. Actually, make that three. You heard right; three. The first, which I'm currently working on, will take place in the center of the city, near the main Palace where Bail Organa lives, a large town square, lots of buildings, alleyways, etc. Here's a sneak peek:

Image

Custom textures galore. Since I've no clue how to model any custom buildings or anything, I've decided to do the next best thing; make custom textures for all the buildings in the map. Though, if anyone's willing to help, PM me and we'll talk about what kinda buildings I need and stuff. Though, right now, I think the Bespin buildings fit in quite well. Though, I may need some custom buildings, since there's only so many ones I can use from Bespin (and Kamino, which has some pretty good ones too). And that's not the final sky. I actually took this screen in BFBuilder, and added the sky to make it look a little better without all that... whiteness. And I've still got a lot of work to do; adding more buildings, making the sky, etc. In fact, I just started work on this map yesterday. Everything you see there, in that screen shot, was made in less than six hours last night. This map isn't even ready for an alpha yet. Still got a lotta work to do.

As for the second map? Well, I don't want to give the secret away, so all I'm gonna say is; it'll take place way up in the upper portion of the city. You know, the skyscrapers and everything. Kinda like how Rends made two versions of his Coruscant map; one in the upper city, and (soon enough) one in the lower city. It'll be cool though; don't you worry.

And the third, if possible, I hope to make it a space battle. Maybe not, because I doubt by the time I finish the first two, I'll even have time to make the third, since by then, BFII might be out and nobody'll even play BF anymore. I don't know, we'll see. I'd like to do it, but I just don't know about it. The first two I'll definately try to make before BFII comes out though.

So, you may be asking, "How the hell's he going to do an Alderaan map if it was blown up?"

Good question. It's actually not going to be in either the Clone Wars (I don't even think they fought on Alderaan during the Clone Wars...) or the GCW (for obvious reasons, of course). It's going to take place right in between the two. Four years after ROTS, but... about 14-16 or so years before ANH. The Empire's just been formed, and pockets of Rebellion are sprouting up throughout the galaxy. Palps, sensing that Bail Organa is secretly a traitor and is supporting the Rebel cause by supplying them with funds, sends a large force of his troops to Alderaan to eliminate Bail Organa and any Rebel forces that get in their way.

The troops he sends are, in fact, the very last of the clone troopers still being put into service by the Empire. About a year or so before, the Empire began to quickly start to run out of funds. Putting higher tax prices out so as to support itself, was one of the main reasons the Rebellion actually started (Sounds familiar, don't it? Anybody who's taken an American history class should know). Eventually, the Empire found out what was cutting their profits so drastically; their Cloning program. Due to such advancements in the cloning process and the declining of resources to carry it out, it began to cost the Empire more and more to support its massive Cloning program.

Quickly, the Empire began to draft citizens into the military against their will. They were rigorously trained, and became the very first of the Stormtroopers that would begin to replace the Clones in the following years. The Clones slowly died out, and the Stormtroopers replaced them, until eventually, only a small force of about 1000 Clones were left in the Imperial ranks.

When the Empire declared war on the Rebellion and invaded Alderaan, the Clones were sent rather than Stormtroopers, since they were much more expendable than the Stormies. The 1000-strong force invaded the capital city, and soon enough, found themselves drastically overwhelmed. The citizens, usually such peace-loving people, decided it was their duty to protect their home planet from the oppresive Imperial forces. With help from the Rebellion, they soon matched forces with the Empire, and locked into fierce combat, battling all throughout the city.

And that's basically the whole thing. I didn't want to give away too much, but you get the idea. It's going to be Clone troopers vs the Rebels, which make for an interesting combination. I hope to have the first map released by either the end of September, or early to mid October. Look forward to some more screens as the project(s) progress.

Sounds great! The only possible problem I can think of (but I don't care, myself) is this quote...
"Alderaan is peaceful! We have no weapons-"

no, it usied to be a armed planet. Right before the clone wars they launched three carakick light crusiers full of weapons, armor, munitions and other war stuff. This was discovered early in the alliance days, becoming a valuble part of Infantry weapons. One of the other cruisers was lost in the asteroids, and then the Viligence, the final cruiser, was discovered in the x-wing book The Kyortis trap, or the bacta war. (not sure which, i think the second one) by wedge antillies and his squadron, when they defected from the New Republic. ( and if you stick with this story line kinda thing, you can create another map, like aboard the lost cruisrer or something). IT WOULD BE SWEET. But anyway, Good luck, and if you need any ideas or information about stuff(non moding please, i have no idea how to mod) i will be sure to help you out :D

Yeah, I found that a problem too, but then I just thought, "Eh, what the hell. Who really cares? As long as the map turns out good."

Though, I guess I have a possible theory to fix that; the people of Alderaan (like I said) felt it was their duty to protect their home planet and families, even if it meant picking up a rifle and killing some Clones. They had no other choice really. And plus, with the Rebellion on their side, they had a boost of morale, knowing that they actually had a chance to win.

And then, after the battle (regardless of which side wins or loses... really, it's your choice. You could just fight on Alderaan's side, or for the Clones...) the people of Alderaan, having suffered a great deal of casualties, declare a vow of peace and neutrality, so as it never happens again.

I don't know, I think it works.

And thanks for your support guys. I'm sure this map'll be great. I'm going to work really hard on making it the best I can.

Well, his loss then. I really don't care about the facts, I just care about the map itself. As long as it's good, I'll be fine with it. Who needs to make it completey accurate anyway? I mean, it's not like the world's gonna end or anything...

Well, in Alderaan's case... it did... but uh... yeah...

I really don't care if it is "facty", I think this is an AWESOME Idea for a map. So far I have not seen a map with Clones Versus Actual people, I've wanted to play one though. Clones v CIS gets kinda boring after a while. I can't wait!!!! :D

Yes, accuracy isn't very important. Just look at Battlefront II. LOL

Alright, since you all seem so eager, here's another screen just to keep you all on the edge of your seats.

Just started putting in a skyway and some more buildings. I'm actually making pretty good progress on this map, considering the fact that I only just started it last night. I'm trying my best to make it as close to Alderaan as I possibly can. So far, so good. We'll see how it turns out...

some one mentioned the 3 carack cruisers that alderan stashed all their weps on... what you could do for a storyline is just say that they called the 3 cruisers back to alderan and grabbed their wepons... then after the battle(s) were over they reloaded the carrack cruisers and sent them back on their original task of randomly hypering throughout the galaxy untill called again

Well, I got some good news and some bad news.

Bad news? No space map. I just don't feel like doing it, since it'll be too complicated, and by the time I finish, BFII will be out with space battles ten times better than I could ever make.

The good news? To make up for the fact that there's no space battles, I'm going to have a map taking place inside of Bail Organa's palace. Lots of rooms, courtyards, throne room, etc. (that is, if I can find a modelor willing enough to make some things for me). So you're still going to get three, just one of them is changed. The first one is, of course, the town square, which will be a small clash of forces with about 250 guys. Two command posts each, right across from each other. Sure, it sounds boring, but it's actually fun as freakin' hell. I just got back from playing a match, in fact. It's more of a "beat the crap out of your enemies and fight your way through to the command post", rather than a "capture the command posts and kill a bunch of guys!". The scenery also adds a nice touch too, so you've got a lot of places to hide and everything. It's a nice change from the usual maps, in which, you may not really do much fighting... at least, not as intense as this...

The next one, will be taking place way up in the upper city, on the skyways. You know, skyways? They're like highways, except... in the sky? Yeah, it'll have a bunch of flyers and everything, with a bunch of inter-connecting platforms and ramps and bridges and stuff. Lots of choke points too, which'll make for some great battles.

And the third, if I get to it (I'll only make it if I can get a modelor to make some stuff for me... in fact, I should maybe form a team of people to help me out with this map; a skinner, a modelor, a mapper (me), and a couple testers... if anyone's interested, drop me a PM and we'll talk) will be the palace. It'll have a large courtyard in the center, with four hallways branching off in each direction, which lead to a bunch of rooms, and more hallways, which lead to dead ends, etc. It'll just be a huge labyrith of hallways and corridors, making for some exciting battles.

So, an intense, large battle in a clash between two forces, a map chock-full of choke points and flyers, and another one with a large maze of corridors and rooms. Sounds good to me...

Alderaan was a nice peacful place to live until Mr Vader tried and tested that Diet Dr. Pepper Death Star on it.Glad i left when i did to find work as a space ranger.Since that terrible accident i lost all knowledge of Alderaan and this is bringing it back to me.
Will wear the correct clothing the next time i ride one of those bloody speeders..

Try putting in some naboo garden boxes and hanging foilage, to add to the Alderan feel, oh and fountains, alderanians are nuts for those, i hear. Naboo and Alderaan are soulmates. . ..(not sure if they are part of the buildings or not)
