Whos heard of this genre before? I'm surprised I havent heard much about it at all, ever scince they were able to make massively multiplayer Rpgs, the next logical step would be massively multiplayer first person shooters, I would think.
I'm not a big MMORPG guy, because most ones I have played suffer from a "click and wait" style of play- you know, you attack once and are helpless for several seconds before you attack again. I like to be in control, and thats exactly what an MMOFPS provides- the control of an FPS and the intense action of being in a hugeass battle where every other character is a human feature of an MMORPG.
Heres a few good ones:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planetside
This one caught my eye first. You take the role of a soldier on a three-way-war on an entire system of planets. The goal is to hold as many planetary bases for your nation as possible. You customize your characther like an MMORPG. You can customize your character in many ways, such as if you want to heal your allies, you can choose medical skills. If you want to be a pilot, you must choose to have pilot skills. These skills are called "certifications" and you recieve more chances to gain other skills as you level up. However, unlike star wars battlefront or other class based games you might be familiar with, you basically cannot do anything other than what you have chosen you want to do. Dont expect to jump in a nearby mech to gun down that imposing army if you dont have the certification to pilot one. While this adds a certain layer of realism and forces team-based play, it may put a few people off. Not me, though, I frankly think none of the newer FPS games do enough to encourage teamwork.

Imagine Planetside in a WWII environment, and you have wwII online. Like planetside, the goal is to have as many bases as possible. However, the focus in WWIIOL is realism- gun accuacy, power, ect. The most impressive thing is the single map it takes place on- its a 1/2 exact replica scale of western europe, making it one of the largest and accurate mmog worlds to date! One of the common complaints about the game is the outdated graphics. However, this is likely a good thing, because if it had incredible graphics, it would be very difficult to keep a playable framerate with such a large map. Another complaint is the extreme realism- when you are killed, your screen goes blank, without any clue as to who killed you. You may not even hear a gunshot, because the game is so realistic that the projectiles go faster than the sound-just like in real life.
Both games come with a trial, so try them out and see what you think.
There are a few other MMOFPSs, but I wasnt as impressed by what I saw with them. You can find them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMOFPS and you can form your own opinion on them.

Re: MMOFPS games
I know a few- Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Team Fortress 2...
(By the way- by definition, these aren't MMOFPS games, but their single-player has no purpose.)
