*repost*
After talking with Quie I decided to repost this. Converting the models from the games compiled .msh is aggainst the EULA and is breaking copyright, its illegal.
Here are the Site Rules, were strict on breaches of Copy Right or Illegal material.

exactly penguin, i told people not to do it for a reason, and they made it where we couldnt open the files for a reason, every games EULA has a part where it says not to reverse compile anything from the game. about grievous' pose, he uses a custom skeleton, he doesnt have any of the same animations as the unit template nor does he need to be in the same pose, that picture above is his base pose.
EDIT: one good thing can come from this though, take out the exporting code and use it simply as a model viewer but try to implement some of bconstructors abilities to read all the other info in the files like bones and hierarchies, then it would be very useful.

lol Mini' - that's what I told her (except for the Grevious' basepose.
Pingy' was right after all
)
I've already sent him a mail regarding everything.
And yeah, an Object Viewer is always nice to have - and I agree with the reading of values and properties and all those things.
I think it can be useful, but I'm just not allowing it to be distributed if it's illegal.
hopefully he can respond

Yep. That was one I was doing the whole night yesterday. Looking for more easter eggs, yay.minilogoguy18 wrote:.EDIT: one good thing can come from this though, take out the exporting code and use it simply as a model viewer but try to implement some of bconstructors abilities to read all the other info in the files like bones and hierarchies, then it would be very useful.

you probably did.
KZ I sent you an Email, and I won't allow this program right away, if you understand. I think I made it pretty clear in the email.
Ace, just remember to watch it when you use it. That's mainly who I'm not allowing it.
This is an extremely useful tool, but there's a 97% chance that it will be used illegal. That's what I'm worried about. With this people can steal models from everybody. I just hate when that happens, and I'm 100% against that.
KZ, since you developed it, I assume you don't mind finishing it up and tweak it instead? Mini's suggestion with the hierachies and bone-support is way better. As an objectviewer it won't end up Diet Dr. Pepper up everything.
I appreciate the contribution - I really do, but when it comes to this... this is where the limit are

This is just out of curiousity, and I am neither arguing for or against this piece of software and because of the business I am in I am all in favor of copyright laws etc I just have a question.
If the whole discussion is about that this program has been deemed "probably illegal" because it can convert a msh file into something that XSI can use, edited then be converted back into a msh and brought back into the game, well isn't that what bconstructor and Milkshape do as well? The only differences I see, from what has been posted I don't have the software, is that this program does it in one step. They still both don't convert everything, UVs bones etc. So what I am wondering is why is it okay to use the one and not the other? If it is, as Penguin stated, that it breaks the ELUA because it is converting a compiled msh and is illegal to do so well isn't bconstructor doing the same thing? I am not totally sure of the history of bconstuctor and it may have gone through the same moral delemas I don't know but I do know it is widely accepted as the program to use if you want to convert a msh file to make changes. I am just as guilty as the next guy having used bconstuctor myself on the odd thing here and there if for no other reason than to see how something was constructed.
This is a great website and I have the upmost respect for Guru and those that run it with him and the principles and rules they have set down so please don't take this as a slight against it but when it comes down to it why is it okay to "illegally" do something one way and not another?
Anyway that is my 2 cents worth, it is still ultimately up to those that run this site to decide.
Keep on modding

i dont really care about the legalities of it, because pandemic probably doesnt give a flying Diet Dr. Pepper but i just dont like people ripping models because people always perceive the porter as a great modder when all they did was take someone elses work and slap thier name on it. for my SW flight sim project i have so much opportunity to take hundreds of other models off the net but id rather just have myself and team make them ourselves so that when people look at it and say "wow" all we have to thank is our own talent and not others.

Don't jump to conclusions Qdin, i'm not out to "steal" anyone's work, and i always give credit where it is due.Qdin wrote:Ace, just remember to watch it when you use it. That's mainly who I'm not allowing it.
In my case, this will mainly be used as a "Model Visual Library" like tool, but can also be very useful in fixing screwed up collision and such, for example, some of the Naboo buildings in the assets.

if it did come to stealing the work wouldnt you just say, when you release it in the credits that Pandemic made the model I just Edited it? and as Mini' said about Pandemic. i agree i'm almost certain they couldnt care less. if you was to steal someones works like a games asset model and putting your name on it wouldnt people notice anyway, then you would look really dumb, but then cause people edit it it isnt exactly "plagiarism" its just modifying something. sorry to go on guys im just saying what i think and im sure others think the same.

But come copyrights arn't just for stealing material, it can also be used for modifying the material, which stops people from stealing someones work, modifing it slightly to call it their own ((such as JKA, theres a massive problem there, everyone believes if you add a 1 pixle black dot on a texture you can call it yours and not get in trouble by the material's owner))

Exactly my point.
FragMe, we've had the same problems with BConstructor, and it's actually the reason the v2 of it don't convert.
Ace, I don't think you will - but you still gotta think of other's
I'm even currently talking with a guy right now on Xfire about the legal parts and ethic dillemas regarding converting from other games. Right now he's just talking about a modder's file, so he gotta ask for permission to stay out of trouble
heh
I've got one goal with Gametoast; to prevent it from being a new JKA... :?it's just that simple. luckily I can also monitor Filefront and the files being uploaded there.

Okay, our official dev seems to have put his approval on it. Since he won't lead us astray when it comes to the law, 3D Object Converter will be allowed and quite frankly endorsed (because of the avenues this opens up) by GT. The staff will just need to monitor conversions, etc to make sure we don't have plagarism. Plagarism will from now on (if it already isn't) an insta-ban.
