If it is possible to acheive results as good as the one's acheived with the water, I have to say that this method sounds like a good idea. However, I have no clue how to deal with modeling, so I would have to ask someone to do that for me, or, I can take some time and try to learn it by myself.

You don't need to have access to or knowledge using a modeling program, unless you want to make your own models to apply that material flag to. But you shouldn't need to since the stock SWBF1 Rhen Var assets contain large tile models that you can place side by side to occupy the areas where you currently have water in your map. And what WULF and Marth are referring to can simply be done using a hex editor. See the following for more information:
