Confusing Problem??

Post by MasterYoda91 »

I went on my computer a couple of days ago and started up SWBF2 and i found that the screen had been stretched to fill the equivalent of 2 of my screen. Meaning that i can only see half the screen(up to the centre of the targeting recticule. I found that this problem was not only on SWBF2 but also on most of my other games. so far i have tried SWBF2, LOTRROTK, AOE3, TES4(oblivion) and fast food tycoon(my brothers game). FFT worked and when i put TES4 in windowed mode that worked but the others didnt. It seems that old games and windowed mode compatible games are the only ones not affected.

PS. The Direct3D test on the DirectX diagnostic tool also suffers this problem.

Unusual Screen Problem?

Post by MasterYoda91 »

All that has changed is that my little brother installed Fast food tycoon. Tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it to check if any of that games options had changed anything, they hadnt.

New tested games:
-Lego Star Wars 2:has problem
-Trackmania: has problem
-Robin Hood Legend of Sherwood Forest(brothers game): works!

Still only older games that work (+oblivion in windowed mode).
Prehaps to do with DirectX 9?

Check you screen resolution, it may have gotten changed for example from 1024 x 768 to 2048 x 768 this can happen especially if you
have a video card that is capable of dual monitors outs.

Ive checked the resolution ond its the same as usual; 1280x1024. Most games i cant check the in game res as i cant see half the screen(often the half with the resolution on) Anyway it cant be the ingame res as the problem exsists on so many games.

If dual monitor is enabled, and the setting 'fit to screen' is also enabled, that might cause it to get skewed (as it Would essentially be 2560x1024 or 2048x768).

This would be computer specific, not game specific (i.o.w: Display or Video Card Settings)

I could see Fast Food Tycoon being the source of your problems. That game was designed for Win95. Pre-Win2000 games sometimes assume a certian graphics state and install their own system files if that state is not present (they are trying to update your system, but end up downgrading and/or breaking it).

Uninstall Fast Food Tycoon.
Check Window's Add/Remove Programs to see if there are any unexpected programs or programs with more than one version installed. Fix any unexpected issues.
Uninstall DirectX
Uninstall all your display/graphics drivers.
Reinstall DriectX and the graphic drivers.

i have already tried uninstalling FFT and i thought DirectX was impossible to uninstall. i think somehow the settings for DirectX 9 in fullscreen mode must have been changed.

Im getting a new computer at the weekend anyway so i wont have the problem anymore. When i get it i suppose i should set some system restore points. I wonder whether any one else has had this problem, it seems quite unique.

Did you just plug in your old hard drive into your new motherboard?

Nah, all new but the case and the floppy disk drive. We've tried everything so we're going to send it back and get new parts sent. Hopefully my old graphics card wont screw up the screen when i put it in my oldest computer. This is getting really, really annoying. :x

At the very least, the computer should display BIOS info. Remove everything except one memory module, the CPU, the heat sinks, fans, and power supply. Plug in your monitor into the motherboard and start it up. Your computer should POST (go through the BIOS startup) and display it to the screen. From here shutdown, add one item, then restart. Keep doing this until it stops working, then you know which hardware item isn't working. If the computer isn't even passing POST, shutdown, take out the memory and CPU, then restart. If the BIOS doesn't give you the correct beep codes for a missing CPU, your motherboard is defective.

Edit: Oops, your motherboard doesn't have onboard graphics. I should have looked that up before I wrote this post  . I'll leave it up anyway.

We tried all that already except removing CPU (we werent sure wether to at the time) Ive gone back home now so its down to my Uncles to sort it out then i pick it up when its sorted. Oh well :sigh:.
