Duplicating symmetrically bug

How to create models in XSI and other 3D applications and make them work in Battlefront 1 & 2. Post models, tips for application usage and share anything XSI, 3DMax, SketchUp, etc.

Duplicating symmetrically bug

Post by daniel »

hey , me again,
does someone know if this is a bug or if you have to do something special do make this work? :

when i duplicate an object in XSI normallly everything works fine and is just fine in ZE as well as in the game.
But when i duplicate an object symmetrically on the x-plane (i of course also freeze and everything) it's somehow screwed up and weird-formed in-game, in the msh-viewer and in ZE.

does someone know more ? thx

Firstly go into the display options and turn on backface culling the in the performance tab so that you can tell whether polies are flipped or not. With that outta the way whenever you clone an object the best thing is to have the center at 0,0,0 (freeze all transforms) and then just clone and type -1 in the X scaling and then freeze scaling on that object and voila. I do this all the time for objects and mostly character models using the clone single tool so that the copy fill symmetrically follow the object it was cloned from.

okay so you do this everytime you want to duplicate something symmetrically? so this would also work e.g. for a building that is built symmetrically ?

If you are build a totally symetrical model then build half of it as I am assuming you are doing.
Then either do the duplicate symetrically or you could even do the symmetrize polygons (select all the polies then in the modify polygon menus you will find the symmetrize polygon option.
In both cases you should make sure that all transforms of the orignal model are frozen as well as freezing the modelling stack. It also best if the model is built and or moved to one side of the 0,0,0 axis so it will be symmetrical across it. After doing the symmetry thing remember to freeze the modelling satck again.

Either way, or even the way mini said to do it should work. I prefer the symmetrize polygon method as it will weld the points along the symmetry line together so you have one mesh.

But the best way is to play and see what works best for you and best for the mshex exporter if that is what you are using.

okay thanks for the advise, but my actual problem WAS that the duplicate symmetrically funktion did NOT work !. it appears normally in XSI but in mshex, ZE and in-game somehow not symmetrically at all , even though i've frozen everything.
I appreciate of course your help but my question in the begining was if it is some kind of bug or if i have to do something special to make duplicate symmetricaally-function actually work.

The duplicate symmetry funciton is working it is the exporting of it that isn't.
So what I was suggesting was "fixes" or other options for you to try to see if they helped.

I tried the duplicate symmetry after see this topic and the only really wierd (or cool thing depending upon your point of view) is that if your original is textured so will the duplicate but if you move the original mesh the texture on the dup moves even though the actually object doesn't, until you freeze modelling on the dup.

What options are you selecting on the pop up window? Try unselecting freeze negative scaling, I think that is what it is called or something like that. Then do the normal freeze and try exporting that.

If that doesn't work and since you are using mshex, I assume you are merging it all into one mesh before export, try selecting all the polygons of the model then do an Extract Polygons (Delete) which can be found in the Create menus under Model side tab. That may do a better job of freezing than freeze does.

which pop-up do you mean ? when i duplicate (duplicate symmetrically) there doesn't appear any pop-up. Or do you mean when creating the original object? which XSI version are you using (me : XSI 6.01)

There isn't a pop up box which allows you to choose which axis to choose to symmetrize around?
I use 5.11 but the commands and pop ups should be the same for later versions.

You are using the dup sym you get to by right clicking on the object in the xsi explorer window?

BTW going by memory because I am at work and avoiding doing any work so I can type this. Don't tell my boss

okay  . please let me know if it's not such a good idea writing this while you're at work.
(sry for off-topic)
well actually i duplicate(or duplictae symmetrically ) by just clicking on thy symbol in the ipper part of the screen. does that make any difference ?

EDIT: besides: when i right click on the object in XSI explorer, there's only a dup option, no dup- sym.

Yes memory is bad, the dup sym I was talking about is in the edit menu.
