Gettin' my new lappy

Post by Sniper_eye »

Well, just last month I decided to get an Ibuypower.com Battalion 101 S550-Turbo, and yeah, I am getting right after vista comes out and I had been wondering, do you think I made the right choice? 'Cause I know there are other places like voodoo, Alienware etc. but I wanted to know if what I bought was a right choice. Add any comments or suggestions...

For the external link of the laptop:
http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/conf ... px?mid=176

Anyways, thanks for listening :)

It all depends on how much you want to waste (waste cause you will never get that money again :D)

If you had a whole trash bin full of money to toss, waste, throw through the window, etc... you could buy something better. If you can think, yeah, thats not a bad choice

Off topic: I am wondering, but is Alienware now owned by Dell?

well anyways, I was wondering, my bet is on the G5, but which mouse in your opinion seems better?

-Optical 800-dpi Internet Mouse USB/PS2 for Notebook

-Logitech MX518 Gaming-Grade Optical Mouse

-Logitech G5 Gaming Laser Mouse

- Logitech G7 Laser Cordless Mouse Silver

-Razer Diamondback Plasma Edition Gaming Mouse

I would suggest buying a laptop with an Intel Core Duo. I have a laptop with a
dual core Core Duo,
ATI X1400 (256 total, 128 dedicated, 128 shared)
1 GB RAM
80GB hard drive.
screen resolution of 1280x800

It's the e1505 from dell. It runs vista great, but their are 2 things I must stress:

1. Buy a better video card, this means either buying an e1705 from dell, or some gaming laptop from alienware (yes, they are owned by dell, but they're better, different mother boards, etc.)

2. Buy 2 GB of RAM

And no, a turion or a turion X2 does NOT come up to par with the Core Duos, or the Core 2 Duos

Well, it seems reasonable, but I want to willingly use my laptop when I am/ am not home. Not to offend you, but I dont really have a lust for alienware laptops. I just want a good gaming laptop under $1,500, you know what I mean? But thanks for the tip :)

How do you define "good"?

Mine is "Great". My friends is "Better".

If you are willing to buy a 17 inch laptop from dell, I can keep an eye out for ya. You can get awesome Desktop quality video cards in the dell e1705. You just have to wait for a sale.

You can buy a laptop like mine for about 700-800$ now. (dell)

A 17 inch laptop that is game worthy will be around 1000-1200$ (from dell)

When I say game worthy, I mean a beast that can handle all of the most recent games without a problem (like, for instance, running SWBF2 with anti aliasing at x4 on Yavin 4 with the highest graphic settings)

The main point is this: WAIT for the right sale, don't just buy it because it is good and you want it now (I made that mistake last January, and wound up selling it four months later for only 2/3 of what I paid for it).

Dell has sales like every other week. Trust me, I have been watching them carefully for the last year, in one day there will be at least 20 different ways and prices to buy the exact same computer.

Let me know when you can buy (as in, the money is ready to be spent any given day) and I can post the deals I find here.

Well, sound good?

Sounds good? That sounds ghetto! :P

Anyways, its not like I had anything against dell, it's just my friend had suggested not to buy from dell because of lack of service. :?

Lack of Service? I've had great service with them on the most part.

But there is one thing you must keep in mind when buying from Dell: Entry level really does mean entry level. In other words, pay more money to get the same laptop from the inspiron line of laptops. And never sacrifice a Video Card for more RAM. It doesn't work (trust me, I tried)

Also, don't buy intel's wireless cards: they stink

Also, they hold together real well. I accidentally opened the back of my friends car and his e1505 laptop fell out of the back of the car (it was in a backpack, and the corner of the laptop that hit the ground was not padded).... the fall gave the laptop a nice dent, but it still works great and nothing broke!

I mean if you don't want to buy from them, don't, but I've had good and bad experiences with them; but the good far outrank the bad.

I buy one for so long, and then sell the computer to get money to buy the next one. I have purchased 1 desktop and 2 laptops total from dell.

And also, if something is wrong when you first get the laptop (this applies to any company) notify them immediately, this usually ensures that the problem will be resolved more quickly and thoroughly than it usually would have.

Gaming mouse? You got me there....Not quite sure if you want a load of buttons or a really precise mouse.

For a precision mouse (it has only one extra button) I would recommend the "Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000"

Remember, I heavily recommend a wired, not wireless, mouse. The reason being is because the slightest response time difference between your mouse and the computer could cost you the game. Also, if you're friends have wireless mice, it could interfere or stop one of the mice.

For instance, when me and my friends get together, our bigger wireless mice have slight interference sometimes, and the small wireless mice stop responding to their owners.

I own a wireless one, it is nice for browsing, email, and etc. But I wish I had the Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 that my brother has.

Not necessarily the "gaming mouse" But it has QUICK response time

And back to the topic at hand:

This may sound strange, but I would say for best computer performance, reinstall (not restore) the computer with the XP/Vista Re-Install disc AS SOON as you get it. It may delay your playing on it for a half hour or hour, but it will be run faster after you reinstall.

Why you may ask? one simple hyphenated compound word:

Crap-(soft)ware

All companies dump a ton of junk onto their new computers and it slows them down a whole lot. So it is best to reinstall to get all of it off of the computer. If you don't know how to, don't bother, you don't want to accidentally ruin the brand new machine. But if you do know how or can, you should.

Is a Mobile AMD® Turion™64 MT-40 CPU [2.2GHz, 1MB Cache] w/Hyper Transport Technology considered to be acceptable? I know that the intel core dual proccessor outranks all, but is it ok to use as a proccessor considering the fact that it was used as a proccessor for the Aurou Alienware laptop :? (spelling?)

Let me know what the computer build would be exactly(Video card, Ram, hard drive, etc.), I need more than just the processor to tell you whether the machine would be 'road worthy' or not.

As for the AMD® Turion™64 MT-40 CPU [2.2GHz, 1MB Cache], it is O.K., but will probably be outdated soon as the single core computers are quickly becoming history in the tech world.

And a dual core Turion (Turion X2) is actually almost worse off than the single core Turion, so don't buy a Turion X2.

Interesting....but would it be possible to take out the turion when I have the laptop and replace it w/ a intel dual core proccessor? Futher more, would it be possible to do likewise w/ a Radeon Video card?
