You can't use the newer versions of blender. Download blender 2.49b, open up your .blend with this version (basic object data should carry over just fine) and try again.

Link to 2.49b:
http://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.49b/
(assuming you're using a standard windows 32 bit system, you'll need to download "blender-2.49b-windows.zip" and unzip that)

Sorry to hijack this thread, but i had a minor question and didn't want to start a new thread for it...

Is it possible to make models in the newest version of blender and then import them back into 2.49b correctly?

Yeah. Try loading the .blend file of your model you made using a new version of Blender, directly into 2.49b. If it doesn't work, try exporting the model in .OBJ, and importing it to 2.49b.

It should work just fine because the object and UV data stayed the same.
However, if 2.49b won't open your .blend from a newer version, there is a quicker and better way to go around that, than to go through a .obj file.
- In 2.49b, go to "file"->"Append or link" (shortcut: shift+f1).
- In this new window, make sure you click "link", instead of "append"
- Browse to your .blend file, double click it, open the "Object" folder and then click the object you want to import, click "Load Library".

Mesh and UV data should always transfer correctly, material settings may not (but usually do). If they don't, just create a new material and load your image texture, but because the UV data should be alright, this shouldn't be too much work.

Ah, alright. Thanks for the info. :) It's great to have someone else on the forums who not only uses it as extensively as me, but also far better as well. Always great to learn more about Blender.

Sweet. Thanks for the tips. I've just never been that awesome a modeller so i never really got stuck into 2.49b. I just use whatever's easiest, and that tends to be the most recent....:P

That's totally fine, use what is easiest. I use 2.49b because it's functional and I know it well. I'm very, very bad at learning new UI's. If you can use the newest versions easily then great, wish I could as well. I'm always glad to see people supporting Blender, it's a good program which doesn't get enough credit out there.
