Terragen Gallery

Post by Eggman »

I've been doing a lot of work with Terragen lately, both for BF2 and for fun, so I figured I'd open up a topic to post my renders in rather than clutter up the main graphic art topic. I know a few other people around here have been playing around with the program, so feel free to post your work!

Anyway, here are a few scenes I've made with TG2 over the past two or three days:
Hidden/Spoiler:

Experimenting with multiple shaders on the terrain - this world is sort of a WIP, I want to play around with a few settings until it's perfect.

Same world, better lighting, still has problems with the terrain shaders not blending properly in some places.
Hidden/Spoiler:

Still the same world, but near a lake at sunrise.

Desert planet.

And last, a world based on a certain planet from Star Wars.
I'll be sure to have loads more renders to post over the next few days - I can't mod at school (I use a Mac here), so making worlds in Terragen has sort of become my new hobby.

VERY nice stuff Eggman.
You might even want to try Terragen 2 at some point (a lot more complex it seems).

Hoth or Csilla??

Anyways... nice screens. I couldn't even tell those were made up.

This is a pretty good idea for a topic, else we'd soon take over the Graphic Art thread. :) I'll post some of mine soon.

Very nice render, Eggman. I'm going to try Terragen out myself too, it sounds very interesting.

Glad everyone likes it. :)

The icy planet is based on Hoth (I don't even know what Csilla is). I'm thinking of doing a few more scenes based on Star Wars locales after some more practice.

As for which version of the program I use, I prefer Terragen Classic for creating BF2 skies (simpler interface, faster rendering) and Terragen 2 for creating entire scenes. TG2 does have a more complex interface, but it's not too hard to figure out if you follow the tutorial that comes with the download. Also, scenes in TG2 are based around an entire planet. I can literally create a planet in a matter of minutes by just typing in a few values, then the program takes care of the rest.

Edit: Also, anything I post in here is free for non-commercial use - screensavers, desktops, BF2 skydomes, etc.

Interesting stuff, those scenes look really nice! I might download Terragen 2.0 to give it a try at some point but I need to get my mod at 50% without any distractions before I do.
I did have some from the Graphic art forum, they aren't as good as yours  .
I'll post 'em here now, (back in a sec).

EDIT: Here they are (from the Graphic Art and Everything Else topic):

Of course I can't do everything that you can with Terragen 2 so my capabilities are limited. I'll hopefully get the chance to download it later next week.

Here's the ones I posted in the Graphic Art forum:

I know the foreground is kinda... green. Comments, criticisms are appreciated.

Oh, and how do you choose the location of your light source Sampip? All I can find is heading and the like.

EDIT: New one:

I also fixed the little problem in the second picture:

I figured it out, Sam.

This next one seems to be a popular theme in the galleries over at the main Terragen website, so I thought I'd try my hand at it:

Hope you like it - those clouds literally took hours to render.

Looks good Egg; maybe I'll try that myself once I get a randomly generated heightfield with decently spaced high mountains. :P

On another note... what can I say? I like sunsets.

I'm not sure if Terragen Classic has the same interface for generating heightfields, but to create the mountains in that scene with TG2 I made an alpine fractal, then adjusted the displacement values (amplitude, scale, etc.). It was kind of trial and error. Even small changes can have huge effects - at one point, the planet was basically a big spiky ball. :P If necessary, you can always lower the cloud height as well.

Some work from this afternoon:
Hidden/Spoiler:

Experimenting with oceans - I made a normal heightfield for the beach, then added a sphere object with the same coordinates as the planet, but a slightly larger radius (and a water shader)
And some renders of another desert planet:

As you can see, I also enjoy sunrises/sunsets. I've always had something of a fascination with the sky. :)

One of the next things I want to play around with is adding more objects in the sky, such as moons. I also want to see if it's possible to add another sun (Tatooine, anyone?).

Edit: Yup, adding a second sun is as simple as clicking a button to add another light source to the scene. Guess I know what my next planet will be based off of.

These all look pretty cool. I should use it to make a sky for my wip map.

EDIT: Ok, I tried... the recolored yavin sky is still the best so far...

I use TG2, where'd you get the impression I use classic? Because I said I got Terragen as opposed to TG2? :P
Anyway, I figured out the mountains kinda.

I guess you could make the clouds a little less dense though. Just an idea.

Whoops, mixed you up with sampip.

Anyway, I like it. The clouds do look unnatural compared to what you'd see on Earth (really dense and flat), but it gives them kind of an alien look - like it's some sort of gaseous "ocean."

Yeah, well the mountains look kinda otherworldly too, so that's kinda what I was going for.

Don't worry, my first ones were pretty bad too.

...

j/k, it looks alot better than my first ones anyway. I'd try to adjust the "fuzzy zone" for the snow, and probably the grass too. It looks like geological Neapolitan flavored ice cream. :)

EDIT: You had such a good Egg, that I had to go and beat you to it: :P
