Hey guys!
I've come to a conclusion that I'm gonna get my own computer soon. But there's a few things I'm wondering about:

1. What's the difference between Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Home Basic? (Except for the price)

2. Maybe a stupid question but well, do older games work on Vista? (everything from Star Wars Battlefront 2 to Worms World Party)

3. Some friends of mine got a GeForce 7600-graphics card in their computer and it seems really good and cheap. But is there a card that's much better but not much more expensive?

If I'll need to upgrade my new computers graphics card I'd probably get a GeForce 7600 (the graphics card on the computer I'm gonna get seems to suck so I'd just make it better with anything I think)...

I'd get a graphics card with DirectX 10 capabilities, pr you could wait until more models with that capability are out. As far as the games go, i hear theres been some trouble with some old games, i'm not sure which ones though. Perhaps there is a list out there of game compatibility for the vista?

Also i'd say you have a good choice of card there. You don't relly need Directx10 version card unless you plan to buy new vista only games and then that is if you have the money to buy a GF8800 which prices at around a couple hundred quid each. Also what is the computer you are going to get?

This: http://shop.netcomdata.se/product_info. ... cts_id=430 (swedish site) is the computer I'm planning to get(and it's really cheap for a computer). And I'll get Vista and perhaps GeForce 7600 for it. Don't seem to bad. And what do you mean with quids?

Vista Home Premium seems to be much better then Basic... And it's not much more expensive.

Do Medieval 2: Total war, SW: EaW, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Battlefield 2142 and Worms (ok, most of them are'nt old, but not Vista exclusive or something) work on Vista?

I would absolutely NOT go with Vista. It needs about another year before it's totally stable. Stick with XP.

I agree with Tean. I've heard a lot of complaints with Vista as being way too much resources for today's tech, so problems are arising. Unless you plan to shell out a pretty penny for hardware, then stick with XP. Plus I can pretty much guarrantee that a service pack for vista will be out in about six to twelve months anyways, so it will be another hassle updating (heck sp1 was a 200+ meg download for xp). It is not worth the hassle or the money right now just to play Halo 2. An xbox is cheeper.

Okay... So I should avoid Vista until it's been out a little longer? But then I'd have to buy XP... And it's not much cheaper, and within a year or so it will be pretty outdated, or what do you think? Maybe not by the way... Is'nt Windows 2000 compatible with most games right now? That's pretty old.

Hard to choose between Vista and XP, but maybe it's better to go with XP for a while anyway.

My opinion: do what I'm doing

Dual Boot Vista and XP

Buy your computer with Vista on it. Then obtain an XP license (through an MS employee is way cheaper (20$ for home))

Use Vista to partition your hard drive into 2 equal partitions (or whatever you feel like) (you should at least get a 160GB hard drive, thus 80 & 80). Then install XP on the other partition. Use the vista disk to "repair installation" so you can boot into Vista (installing XP will make the boot loader choose XP by default, that is, until you put the Vista disk in and tell it to repair the Vista installation)

Then install "Vista Boot Pro" this is a free program which lets you easily edit you boot loader, you then tell it which drive to add to the boot loader (choose the one that has XP installed)

Then each time you boot up your computer, it will allow you to choose either Vista or XP.

This is what I'm doing, that way, you can run older/incompatible programs on XP, and do whatever else you want to on Vista.

That's a good idea. But then I'll have to find some other computer to buy (if Vista should be installed already). Cuz' the one I've found was really cheap.

I'd stick with your current system for a while, skip XP, and head to vista in a year or so. I have also heard its a memory/resource hog.

Also, with gpu's, it seems the new thing is running 2. If you wait a year or so for the dual tech to spread out, you can probably shave off 30 bucks from the newer gpu's. So then you can get a stable vista system, and also be able to play next gen games by running 2 gpus

(radeon x1650 pro pci-e crossfire cards are decent and with 2 cards and a medium amount of ram you could run any game well into the future. It'd be costly but then again it will probably last so long you may save a computer update. Right now I think the running price for 2 X1650's would be 380-400 if im not mistaken)

I dont know what your willing to buy or can afford, but I guess all and all now is a bad time to be switching operating systems. XP is going out and Vista is just getting started, and I agree buy XP now would be a waste unless you can get it for cheap (20 bucks?!?). Even if you cant afford the dual-gpus or cant afford to go to pci-e, you can pick up a 'vista certified' gpu for around 130 bucks with 512 ram and all the new tech. If your looking at ati cards, and are planning to stick with what you buy for a while, I'd get the X1950. Its a little pricey but its good, and the difference in $ between a X1650 pro is almost negligible (the only reason I got an X1650 pro is because we're planning to upgrade systems soon and I'll be switching from agp to probably a dual pci-e geforce card
