That's the thing though, there's no reason to make a new common.lvl unless it's for something extremely large-scale. The shipped common.lvl doesn't cover anything that is important to a regular modder.

I thought that when you made a side mod for all maps, you had to make a new side and edit the common.

1-Browse to /YOUR BF2 MODTOOLS FOLDER/assets/sides/common/odf. You should be looking at lots of odf files starting with com_.
2-Hit CTRL+A to select all, then CTRL+C to copy
3-Browse to /YOUR BF2 MODTOOLS FOLDER/data_YOURMAP/sides/YOURSIDE/odf. You should be seeing the odfs for your side. Paste the stuff you copied there.
4-Browse to /YOUR BF2 MODTOOLS FOLDER/assets/sides/common/msh. You should be looking at lots of msh, tga and option files.
5-Hit CTRL+A to select all, then CTRL+C to copy
6-Browse to /YOUR BF2 MODTOOLS FOLDER/data_YOURMAP/sides/YOURSIDE/msh. You should be seeing the msh, tga and option files for your side. Paste the stuff you copied there.
7-CLEAN (A MUST) and munge your new side. You're good to go.

You DO NOT need to copy over the common side with this method, since we're putting all the needed files right into your new side
