Noob Polygon Question (answered)

Post by Lozza »

How many polys can battlefront 2 handle ingame? If it can only have a littlebit, how would you get a big smoothened sphere ingame?

I've seen on the showcase thread a weapon that had upwards of 7k polys. You could use less than 1k I bet and get a pretty smooth sphere.

well weapons up to 7k are pretty well......ineffective since they are so small that most of the polys wont be displayed.
i don think anybody has every managed to crash battlefront because of too high polycount, but it will slow down the game if it is too excessive.
hero assault with 3k polymodels from jka isnt a problem though.

If you're looking for an actual guide, the documentation has the preferred poly count for each type of model. I think its in the art documentation....

True. Would you say computers today can handle double or quadruple easily by now?

If thats a playermodel and there's gonna be about twenty of them running around the map, no way. If its a large prop which takes up most/all of your map, it should be fine.

although there is no known technical polycount there is always a rational one. cramming 20k polys in a single model exceeds that because the model is either so huge that you will have to split it into parts (if its a prop) to let battlefront display it properly or the polys will be so small that atleats half of the model is invisible ingame

and it will of ourse slow donw battlefront in both cases

But what I'm making is a simple sphere that has polygons that make it look like a soccer ball. And I wanted to make the 'soccerball' a grenade.
The reason why there is like 20 k is because i smoothend the mesh out completely so it made lots of polys. Maybe if I make it blocker it might be better, plus the grenade size in battlefront you cant really even see it.

it will be invisible with 20k polys and the size of a grenade
never smooth anything you want to use in real-time (=games) its no good

I made a prop with 13000 polygons and it crashed the game, anything above 8k is pushing it... I dont think Battlefront can handle any more than that without it crashing.

Doesn't it also depend on your computers specs as to what'll crash the game?

if you have a not that old computer it does, but battlefront has a limit too, when pushed it will start to lag or simply crash. shadowvolumes are an example, if you have too many battlefront starts lagging if you dont have a super-high-end computer because its simply not build to handle so many
