Dell Upgrading

Post by Wonderboy »

I have a Dell Inspiron 546, and I want to upgrade my DVD drive. It sporadically reads a DVD, and other times it doesn't. I've tried upgrading the drivers, but they are up to date, and there is no option to roll them back. So, I feel the need to upgrade. I would preferable like to upgrade to a Blu-Ray player. I know my PC is ready because I checked online and apparently you need a graphics card that supports 1920x1080, which I have. So, my question is how do I know which Blu-Ray player to get? I looked up Dell Certified products, but the only thing to come up for my system was RAM.

Newegg.com is a very good site for stuff like this.

http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory ... der=RATING

That's all the Blu-ray drives they have. You can check the customer ratings/reviews, and use their compare feature to figure it out.

Thanks, but my real question was how do I know they are compatible? I mean, I don't want to buy one and it not work.

I'd try to look up your computer model's specs, then. Usually all you have to worry about is the connection type though (usually SATA).

Long story short if the plugs are correct (either SATA or IDE) then it's compatible. I've worked with Dells extensively over the years - though the motherboard is typically exclusive peripherals like drives and cards work the same as any other machine.

Thanks guys, time to look inside my PC. =)
I checked manually and it says I have an ATA. Great.
My DVD drive is this:
TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H653G ATA Device
Am I correct in this assumption?

Yeah, as long as it doesn't say "Serial ATA", but just "ATA", it is IDE... And I doubt they make IDE blu-ray players

Hurray! I'm still satisfied even though the Blu-Ray writing is only 2X. Hey, at least its a Blu-Ray.
