It's actually faster to associate the .pk3 extension with WinZip, or whatever you're using for .zip files. It won't break your other filetype associations, and all you'll need to do is doubleclick any pk3 file to open it instead of changing the extension all the time.
..and, yes, extracting and unzipping are the same thing.
What's this about WinRar? It can open zip files just fine.

A pk3 is a zip file with a different name. The compression method is exactly the same - it's just been renamed so you can tell that it's for JKA. Therefore, renaming, say, "zzz_dc15rifle_pah.pk3" to "zzz_dc15rifle_pah.zip" will work just fine. It doesn't need to be a folder - WinRAR will open it, and the files will be there.
Or, as has already been said, just change the association for pk3's to WinZip or WinRAR or the Windows compression DLL. If you didn't understand that, just stick with the first method.

How to unpack pk3
7-Zip also recognizes .pk3 as an archive immediately, and all you have to do is extract the contents.

***Temporarily locked***
This is a message to all. We as a staff need you to MAKE SURE you have permission to convert a model. You need to contact the original author and then post in your download that you were given permission to use his/her model. If you attempt to contact someone and don't hear from them in a few weeks, let us know that you tried. At that point go ahead and convert it, giving the author credit.
Any staff member can unlock this 10 hours from the time of this post. I just want this locked temporarily so everyone sees this message.

No the first one, the fans have no legal right to give you permission to release the models unless they designed them.
If Lucasfilm invented the design then ONLY Lucasfilm can give you permission, and it has to be explicit written permission in the form of a licensing contract.
If you don't believe me, call a lawyer. If you're worried, call a lawyer. If not, do whatever you want.
The most the admins here can tell you is what the rules of this message board are.
DON"T take anyone's word that you can release models that are not your own design, it's simply not true. Don't believe me? Again, call a lawyer. Think Pandemic or Raven owns the star wars models in their games? Nope. Lucasfilm does. Raven and Panedemic and every other developer is just work for hire and Lucasfilm owns all that work. even the original characters in games like Clone Wars (Cydon Prax) are owned by Lucasfilm as the parent of Lucasarts.
Is this sinking in yet or do I need to say it again?

I think that the issue being debated here is basically modders' ethics, rather than strictly legal issues. 'Cuz under that logic, pretty much all modding (or at least the distribution of mods) is illegal because the models being converted are reasonable representations of LucasArts characters.psych0fred wrote:No the first one, the fans have no legal right to give you permission to release the models unless they designed them.

Or do I misunderstand? Is there nothing wrong with converting, say, a modder-made model of an Ithorian? That's still illegal because it's a Star Wars character, right?
Mmhnm...Somehow I feel more confused after typing this post.

I'm assuming you guys don't want to break the law and think that getting permission means you aren't.
It doesn't.
No fan can give anyone else permission to make use of Lucas's designs. Only Lucasfilm can.
If this message board requires one fan get permission from another fan before they can talk about a model or post a link on this site, that has nothing to do with Lucas's intellectual property or the law, that has to do with the rules of this site. The permission you are getting only matters to this site's admins trying to enforce the rules of the site. It does not make it legal.
To be perfectly clear, no one can give you permission to distribute Star Wars models besides Lucas.
Getting permission from a fan has nothing to do with what's legal. Don't be confused and think because a fan created a model using a Lucas design and has distributed it that he/she isn't breaking the law and further breaking it by telling you that you can use their model and setting you up to break it even further when you decide to give someone else permission to use your derivative model. And that's the whole point of licensing.
Legally, it starts and stops with Lucasfilm, so make sure you don't confuse the rules of this site with the law.
I just want to make sure that's clear when you hear "it's okay if you get permission" that means it's okay to talk about it and post pictures of it here because that's what the rules of this site require, it doesn't mean it's legal.
And yes, to answer your question most of what we do as modders is illegal assuming you are actually producing content and offering it to the community.
"Is there nothing wrong with converting, say, a modder-made model of an Ithorian?"
Wrong to who? The law says it's illegal to make an Ithorian without getting a license from Lucasfilm.
This site says if you don't have permission and you talk about it here you'll get banned.
That's why I asked who the site's rules were designed to protect, because it's not the law and you need to make sure you know that in case you are under the impression because of this sites rules that you are free and clear legally.
