Computer takes a long time to load BF2/maps [Solved]
I've got an OptiPlex GX620 that runs an XP, and for some reason whenever I start BF2, as well as load any kind of map on BF2, it always takes about 30 seconds or so to get to the loading screen. But once it is all loaded up, it works fine. Why is this?
*EDIT*
Also, whenever I join a server (which still takes a while to load), I always wind up with a message saying "Server connection lost".

Re: Computer takes a long time to load BF2/maps
Better yet, is this a laptop or desktop using an onboard video processor as opposed to a card?
From the trouble shooting doc on the CD
From the trouble shooting doc on the CD
I had the same problem about not being able to join a network game when the laptop was runnning Vista, amazingly enough it worked better once I changed the operating system to Window 7.Integrated Video Chipsets
When your computer has an onboard video chip on the motherboard and the system only meets the minimum requirement for RAM, you may experience various problems that occur because the video chipset may use system memory for its video memory. You may experience the following issues:
• Star Wars Battlefront II may not run.
• Transitions may be slow.
• You may go to a black screen when task switching for a prolonged period of time.
• The frame rate may be slow and choppy.
• You may not be able to join Multiplayer games.

Re: Computer takes a long time to load BF2/maps
Internet Speed:
Download: 2.19 mbps
Upload: 1.40 mbps (When connecting to Denver, CO)
Which really confuses me, as it was around 5.00 mbps about two days ago.
Processor Speed:
Can't find where it says that...I right clicked My Computer and clicked on Properties, but I don't know where to look.
Oh, and, this is a desktop.

The info is right on the window that pops up near the bottom right corner when looking at the general tab.
Also where does your monitor plug into 1 or 2 as shown in the picture.

If it is 1 then you are using the onboard video card and it will fall under what I posted earlier.
If it is number 2 then it may come under the not enough ram part, I goolgled the computer model you stated and it comes default with 512k of memory.

I don't see any window that pops up near the General tab, but on the bottom right of the tab is this, if this is what you're talking about:
Also, my monitor plugs into '1'. The blue thing, right? So it seems I need to get a graphics card then. How do I go about doing this? Can I just get any old card and put it into this computer? I remember a Nvidia graphics card on one of my old computers in my garage that used to play BF2 rather well.
Code: Select all
Dell OptiPlex GX20
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz
2.79 GHz, 0.99 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

Re: Computer takes a long time to load BF2/maps
The computer seems fast enough as for the other card, if this computer has a slot that the card can fit into then yes it would probably work for you. Before you ask easiest way to see if it will work is to look at the card and the available slots on the new computer
Also in C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars Battlefront II\Install there is a program called syscheck.exe if you run it it will let you know of any short comings as it relates to your computer.

Well, my brother helped me get the card and fix it all up, and now BF2 runs almost perfectly! Thanks!
