Putting a unit from a mod to another map?

Post by superdupertruper »

Hello. I was wondering how you can take a unit that's in a mod and transfer it to a map with a unique side?

Basically what I'm trying to do is take the rebel "Commando" unit from Battlefront Extreme 1.0 (the guy with the disguise kit?) and make it so I can play him on the Star Destroyer Assault map. (I think the SDA map has a unique side for rebels because it has a custom unit and some re-skinned units)

I got the BF2 mod tools and was going to read all the documentation, but about 20 minutes into reading I felt I was getting a lot of information I was never going to retain and I didn't feel like I was any closer to figuring out what I need to. I was hoping maybe somebody could explain it in simple steps and layman's terms, because I don't plan on being a modder of any sort, I just really wanted to know how to play that one trooper on a different map.

Hopefully I was clear explaining what I'm looking to do and this isn't a spam/noob/stupid/RTFM post. Sorry if it is. Thanks in advance!

As a general rule, we do strongly emphasize the "read the manual"-type post here. There's not a whole lot you can do if you're not interested in learning some ins-and-outs of modding - there's no simple change you can make to make that happen.

Alright. I kind of expected that, which is perfectly fine, I was just hoping I'd get lucky and it was a small change to be made. I'll take another crack at those documents.

Thanks for your speedy response!!

You said you're reading the documentation. What you should be doing (and it's not clear if you are doing this or not) is reading the documentation and doing what's being explained at the same time. That should make things much easier.

You can't add a unit to someone else's released map.

You can. You just need to add a new era or mode to the map and load the unit through the lua. (But you will need the CP names, unit names etc...)

You would also have to get permission from whoever's map your using, and likewise with specific unit's from someone's side mod, unless they have released the assets, in which case you could just give them credit. I don't know if these rules apply if it's just for Personal use though.

Personal use is fine; if you know what you're doing and you know how to reconstruct a .lua from reading through a .lvl file with a hexeditor (it's not difficult if you're already pretty familiar with modding - which is all I mentioned in the first reply), then you can pretty much mix and match whatever you want. I've tossed Dark Times sides onto others' maps before just to try them out, and it's usually not a problem at all - just don't release them without permission of any authors whose material you're using.
