Space map is too large (in data size)

Post by linksith »

Hi, I'm working on a space map that I intend to be very large, but not as large as the current data size. All I did was in multi-select I selected all the objects of the republic space ship, hit copy, hit paste, and made 14 more of those republic cruisers (I had intended to make more in the future). I think something went wrong but it took a long time to munge. It took about 40 times more time to munge it! So I decided to take a look at the end result and well... the size was remarkably and disturbingly large. Now Battlefront crashes when I try to load it. Before I made this new change the map size was 88.2 MB.

Here is the size of the map if you would really really really like to know.
Hidden/Spoiler:
7.7 GB

 :faint:
If you've had this problem in the past or know what went wrong, please help! :runaway:

Each map can only have so many objects. It appears that you surpassed the limit. So you need to delete many of those objects for battlefront to run the map.

Although it doesn't account for everything, 14 capital ships is far too many for the game to handle.

There are no defined limits, per say. The game just has memory limitations for each type of thing (models, textures, animations, etc). Whatever you did, 7.72GB is a major problem, and there's no coming back from that sort of error, since even if you could undoing all of that would take weeks of guesswork.

Best bet? Start over. A good rule of thumb is to always scale down how big you want your map to be. With 14 cruisers you couldn't even fill in enough AI, let alone find anyone with a PC strong enough to render all of that with a decent framerate. At BEST 3 cruisers per side might be okay, but that's the whole reason you see frigates. They fill in the spots that are bare and add the atmosphere without killing polygon, model and texture counts.

Couldn't I multi-select the cruisers and delete them? I only copied the cruiser and made 13 more without making any changes to the LUA. I also didn't make any more regions or spawn paths because I just wanted to see if they could work.

I think my computer is pretty powerful. Here are the specs.
-OS- Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
-CPU- AMD Phenom(tm)8450 Triple-Core Processor 2.10 GHz
-RAM- 3.00 GB (2.75 GB usable)
-GPU- ATI Radeon HD 3400 Series
---Dedicated Video Memory: 256 MB
---Shared System Memory: 1151 MB
---Total Available Graphics Memory: 1407
-Hard Drive- 527 GB, 246 GB free
The rating it gave was 4.1 and currently a 5.9 is the maximum score(or so I've read).

EDIT: Well......... I just found something out. My computer made it look like I right clicked my folder when instead I accidentally right clicked just a little bit to the side and got the result of my addon folder instead. Terribly sorry but the real map size is 88.4 MB.

Yeah, but what about everyone else who is going to play your map? Not everybody has a quad-core PC.

I know not everyone has a powerful PC. I have other computers too with computer specs that most people have. They are windows XP Pro 32-Bit (all of them) with older CPU's that range from 800 MHz to 2.6 GHz, older GPU's that range from 128 MB to 256 MB, and the RAM is usually under 1GB. I just use this computer to make mods and test them until they're done, but strangely it won't play SWRC. So far I've been able to play mods on my other computers as well.

you maybe have set to many CPs, the limit is 16 (or 15, I dont remember clearly). If you have more, the map WILL crash.
