Cool modelling tool by Google?

Post by FragMe! »

Yes Google, they have a program out called SketchUp (their
marketing guys need help) Anyway this is a very easy to use and very versitle modelling tool. There is a free lite version as well as a Pro version
($495us) also an 8 hour demo of the pro version. This program will do a
XSI export including textures. It exports them as JPG which I have found you need to go into properties render and just change them back to TGA it keeps the mapping. I have only played with it for a couple of hours but it took me 10 minutes in SketchUp and another 5 in XSI to do something that in XSI took me lots of time and tries (okay I am new to modelling) and it still didn't come out as well as this.
The scale is still about 3 to 1 as in XSI.

Once I figure out how to insert a JPG I can show a comparision.

Enjoy

I prefer XSI to any program I've used before, it is extremely powerful once you get the hang of it.

SketchUp is rather a CAD-tool than a "real" modelling tool. AFAIK google licensed it to create the opportunity to make 3D-buildings for GoogleEarth users. Of course it is nothing compared to XSI, since it is actually designed for designing architecture, technical thingies and stuff. And however, you still need XSI to convert things you made to SWBF supported filetypes. And since XSI:Foundation costs just the same as SketchUpPro, SketchUp is pretty much superfluous, imho ;)

I am aware of the virtues and or power of XSI I do own a copy. I am also aware it is more CAD based
but having worked with CAD programs for 15 some odd years I find it quicker and easier to use for somethings.
Also I know not everyone has the finaces to own two programs and XSI is the better to spend the money on I was
just throwing it out there just in case there were old CAD die hards like myself.

Cheers

Cool, that's nice.
Only problem is this: Can SketchUp export to anything xsi can read?
If so, then all you'd have to do in XSI is the texturemaping and any technical stuff, then export.
But if it can't, then your sunk...

I don't know but if you can export a msh file in XSI to .3ds then sketchup can edit it.

Wow, that model is great. Good work, Dragon93! I really want to see that in-game.
By the way, I've tried to model some in Google SketchUp, and I think it's really weird. Well, I'll stick to XSI... Image

Ah, Skecthup. My school uses it in the Industrial Tech class. They use the school versiom, but I've only used the Demo versiom at school. It's VERY easy.

Lemme guess, Dragon93 told you where to get it?

But that program is good enough for modelling... nothing else. the texturing sucks in it, and those textures aren't the best for weapons  :P just so you know it.

it can export as .obj if I'm not mistaken  but it seems like the .3ds which Dragon93' exported was... well - empty :?

So before you want anyone to convert it, you should think about your polygons :)
The barrels are probably cylinders, but I think the default is on +20 segments, wihch is WASTE. cut it down to 8 for the barrelse; if you've made a good modelling/texturing job noone will care anyways. and even 5 or 6 would be enough  and what's more important; MAKE IT SMALL.

The model I got from Dragon93' was thousands grids huge, and was poiting up on the air in a random direction... Let it point against the Z-axis, and the model sholdn't be bigger than 1 grid :o

That's all I've got to say :P
