Re: Important - Map Names (###)
I guess the maps where I renamed their 3-character folder either didn't have custom localization or I just didn't care enough about it to consider it a huge problem, but in any event if you absolutely must have another map with the same 3-character ID installed simultaneously and you find yourself renaming the folder and that map also contains custom localization then just take a few seconds of your time to open the addme.script in your favorite Hex Editor and change the path to match that of the renamed folder.Maveritchell wrote:Without making too fine a point of it, that's not completely true. No essential functionality is lost, but you will lose any addon localizations for your mod. The reason for this is because every file in an addon map/mod is loaded relative to the location of the core.lvl (which is always located in MODID\data\_LVL_PC) except for your addon core.lvl. It can't be loaded relative to itself (that would make no logical sense) and consequently is loaded directly through your addme.script (munged .lua) relative to the location of the game's core.lvl.AceMastermind wrote:If you download a map that has the same 3 character ID as one you already have installed then you can just rename the 3-character folder for one of them without breaking anything.

If this topic keeps going I would suggest that it not focus on differences in 3 letter ID names. However, it might be useful for seeing what maps others have already made and what ideas others have used. It may also serve as a nice archive on Gametoast for modders to download maps from. New maps could be highlighted in yellow or something. Maps that are considered great around the community could be highlighted in say red or something. I don't know just some suggestions to keep/make this topic useful.

Soooo....why are we repeating his work, again?
Ya know what, screw it. While we're at it, let's toss out the Periodic Table of Elements and recreate it. Send a sample of your findings to this address along with its atomic mass, number, and two-letter abbreviation so we can categorize them all. Oh, but you can't send in your discoveries unless you are the original discoverer of the element. Please note that any elements that you made up and have not yet discovered are not acceptable entries unless they are 50% thought up.

funny, but Alexsecura's list is out of date if i recall, I know this seems kinda worthless but think of it this way, these will be helpfull to new modders, obviously older modders will fiind it pretty darn stupidTwilight_Warrior wrote:Gee, that sounds EXACTLY like alexsecura's archive...poop wrote:If this topic keeps going I would suggest that it not focus on differences in 3 letter ID names. Re: Important - Map Names (###)
Alright, alright, so the "submit your own work" rule is stupid. Ok. So, from now on, if you're submitting someone else's work, put down that author. I'll update the original rules to reflect this.
EDIT: There are many reasons for keeping this working.
1st: So you can pick a 3-letter code that no one has to mod to get your map to work. Do you think that, 1, regular non-modders want to do more work to get the map to play? And, 2, non-modders don't know about this trick to get the addme.lua to work.
2nd: It's a library of sorts, so you can find maps that you want, or use the names and authors for different purposes ("I loved that modified LAAT in that map! It was in a map called STR (just an example)...let's see...! I know where to find it! It's in the Catalog! Let's see...here, STR. It's by soandso! I'll PM him and see if he'll give me the modified LAAT!"). Admins: you could use it to track down people who lacked permission to use props or coding or if they broke any rules when making their map.
3rd: Gives people an opportunity to find interesting maps via the Catalog to search on SWBF Files and download/play.
If it is allowed to do so, I will take a look at alexsecura's list and add it to the Catalog.
EDIT 2: That is, if I find it....

Though I wasn't around at the time, the only reason Secura's archive fell out-of-date was because no one cared enough about it to use it. At least, I'm more than 50% sure that's what happened, so that qualifies as a WiP thought, right?

I have to wonder why most of these criticisms are negative and directed with an arrogant attitude. As far as I know, I haven't been offensive in any way, nor has THEWULFMAN. We're trying to make people's lives easier, even if our efforts end up being miniscule. Give us a break. (Polite constructive criticisms aside.)

Agreed. If you have a download link for your map then post that as well (URL to your map's description page is good).THEWULFMAN wrote:to adress the very last part, It is important that you also post the download link, and i also suggest for those maps that are on filefront, that you post your review score, ie

Re: Important - Map Names (###)
Well, the first few criticisms were not arrogant at all. They tried to make you understand that your efforts to make people's lives easier were in vain. In fact, you're only making yourself do more work for nothing, which is making people's lives harder if they go through every single mod/map to give you the three letter code. I don't speak for everyone else, but MY post was slightly sarcastic because you seem to be ignoring everyone else who is trying to show you this.
We realize you mean well, but we're trying to tell you it's not worth it.
Consider this. You have a coffee mug. It has a handle. But you decide that it would make people's lives easier if the handle were slightly bigger. So you call the coffee company. You ask them to mass produce coffee mugs with slightly bigger handles. But that would require more or different machinery to produce the new handle, plus a slightly bigger mug to accomodate the slightly bigger handle, so people would have to take the time to design a completely new mug and recalculate costs. Then once they finalize the design they would have to replace and reprogram more machines to produce different parts. The effort could cost the coffee mug producers hundreds of thousands of dollars and alot more work than necessary just to make the consumers lives "slightly easier."
If you couldn't spot the analogy, Secura's list is the coffee mug you already have and you're trying to remake the coffee mug.
You mean well, and we understand this, but in the long run, no one uses coffee mugs anymore. We all just use the paperboard coffee cup Starbucks gives us...

In my opinion, It's better to have a good archive that is accessible on the forums, which is a better solution than having to search many different sources that in most cases are out of date, and have broken links. Also, it's much easier to update it here.

Being negative doesn't mean that they are not constructive. A not constructive criticism would be "Your work is worthless because it´s a cloudy day or because I´m in a bad mood", it has no sense. But most of the people have given you a couple of good reasons, they are giving you their opinion, not attacking your work.
Anyway, if you consider your work is worth enough then you shouldn´t keep trying to convince everyone of this, just keep on with it. You can´t expect all the criticisms to be positive, people may or may not like your work.

Re: Important - Map Names (###)
Constructive criticism, as was explained to me a very long time ago, was "criticizing people or their work, but structured in such a way as to allow growth (positively) and not to attempt to deter people (negative). What some of you are saying is "don't bother wasting your/our time", more or less. That's not growing, that's deterring.martin105038 wrote:Being negative doesn't mean that they are not constructive. On the other hand, it has become clear to me that most of you feel strongly about this and insist on having the Catalog stopped so "we can stop wasting time". THEWULFMAN: Do you want to keep going with this, or just give it up and have this thread deleted?
