Darda: Beaches

Beaches
By Jedimoose32

Alright well, I've been taking another huge break from modding. Worked on a few small projects here and there... ended up scrapping most of those (not always intentionally :( ).

I'd like to introduce a relatively simple map that I've made to resemble a miniature D-Day landing. The back-story goes like this:

Code: Select all

After a long year of bloody struggle between the CIS and the Republic for control of the planet Darda, the clones have been given the go-ahead for Operation Moot, a daring beach assault on the Separatists' primary line of defense...
Screenshots: HERE.

Most of the modifications that I made are found in the weapons and unit stats. For example, certain units now have a semi-automatic blaster rifle instead of a pistol. Also, it seemed a bit odd to have snipers storming a beach, so the clone sharpshooter is now a clone stormtrooper (please don't give me heck for that name, I know it can be easily mixed up but in this case it is a reference to "specialist soldiers of the German Army in World War I"). The stormtrooper carries a flamethrower. The CIS is dug in fairly deep on this particular beach, possessing large recoilless turrets in strategic positions on the higher ground. In order to counter this threat and provide heavy-duty support for the offensive ground troops, the clones have a trio of AT-TEs at their disposal. Once they push far enough up the beach, they unlock the destructive power of AT-RT walkers as well.

The objective for the Republic is to push the CIS uphill and destroy the large radar dish at the end of the map (still working on the bunker for that bit).
The objective for the CIS is to halt the Republic's advance and protect their radar station at all costs.

Progress:

Map - 90%
Units - 85%
Misc* - 70%
Heroes - 0%

*Localization, loading screens, details, foliage, sound fixes, etc.

All beta testing spots are filled.

Current Beta Testers (6/6)

Basically the smoke is coming from markers that were fired from offshore before the assault. In the military, different colored smoke grenades are assigned meanings for each operation. I've seen green smoke used as a kind of "attack here" beacon in several movies/games so I thought it would be a cool thing to add on the beach.

I'll edit the original post and add a list of current beta testers.

Hurra for a modder who got back!
The map looks a bit (too) open but it sounds cool.

Could I beta?

One of the options I'm considering is having a large open lane in the center of the map for larger-scale battles, which would include the walkers and turrets, and then have more constricted areas off to either side. I've already achieved this to a certain extent with the forests flanking the hill on the beach, but maybe I should try to enhance that aspect a bit?

Questions or comments on that idea?

(Still looking for one more beta tester, first come first serve.)

Played it, that was good. Ok, the CIS has a large advantage on the Republic, but I guess it's intentionnal, to judge by the presentation of the map. After that, I liked the Forest part. There might be a little problem about the textures; The Kaskyyykian barriers don't really fit with the Yavin/Endor ground.
I've just noticed that when you shot on a droideka, its the laser impacts are much too bigs compared to the shield size if you understand what I mean. Btw the skins are well-done :)
Nice work!

Thanks for the feedback. I'll look at changing the textures or models of the barriers. The droideka shield thing is sort of leftover from some fooling around that I did earlier in the development process. The shields used to be super big so that allied troops could hide underneath them, but the AI never used this and I couldn't figure out a way to make them do so, and as a result I shrunk the shields back down... the model at least. The effects are still set to the original size and I'll fix that when I have a moment.

Should I add more to the forests?

Questions, comments?

EDIT: There are a few other details I haven't sorted out with the sides yet, like the Clone Commander's cape (still purple), and a few of the weapons. Still feel free to point out any issues you see.

i agree within the most parts of what helkaan says, i like the map quite much, it is difficult, but good.
you should add more objects on the map, more to find cover and the cis could also get some vehicles
maybe you can make the light a little bit darker and the atmosphere will become really cool i think.
maybe you can add other weapons, cause you made side changes and i think this map needs this too.
skins are all great, i like the one you made.
all in all a great map, and good luck for the rest :D
if you plan a second beta, i will test this map again

Oops. Try checking again.

To everyone else, thanks for the feedback so far. I'm thinking STAPs for the CIS, does that sound good?
Foliage is definitely something I want to add at some point.
A few boulders and logs here and there in the forest, and maybe some big pieces of driftwood on the beach?

Questions, comments, ideas?

I'm planning for a second beta release within the next few days. I'm quite busy working full-time at this point but I put in an hour of work every night if I can. Everyone who is already testing will get an updated link, and I might open up two or three more spots to new people who are interested.

I'm reluctant to add those, unless I was going to scrap the AT-RTs. Too many kinds of vehicles detracts from the game in my opinion.

Quick Update:
-Fixed Commander's cape
-Fixed size of droideka's shield
-Fixed lighting (darker)
-Added foliage

Tonight, I'll be doing some localization fixes, adding some random debris and small props to be used for cover, and maybe tackling the radar station.

Though a thought just came to me: while playtesting this map myself, I have never been able to reach the top of the hill as the Republic. Is anyone else experiencing this? Both sides wipe each other out before anyone can get that far. So on second thoughts, I'm not going to touch the top of that hill until I figure out how to balance that factor properly.
