Did you freeze all transforms and all modelling prior to enveloping?
If not then that is why it looked like it asploded

Go delete your weights, freeze transformations, freeze and then envelope it again. That solved it for me if I had problems with the weights. I believe it was caused by using the main envelope function for components(points, polygons) of 1 object(use weight editor/weight paint to refine your weights on one object).

Save a weight preset so you don't have to keep refining the weights then remove the envelope operator and cut all polygon mesh objects completely from the hierarchy then freeze their transforms, rebuild the hierarchy then set the envelope and apply the saved weight preset then export and everything should be fine.
