Why is everything to the power of 2?
i was just wondering why all of the textures are always to the power of 2. what would make the game designers do something like that anyway? its just weird that it would be to 2, why not 1 or something. is there a real reason behind them making everything to the power of 2?

oh yeah, i forgot about bits. i actually didn't think that they would matter for something like this but i guess i don't really know all of what bits are for.

What's the practicality of a 1x1 texture dimensions for everything?Dakota wrote:...textures...

But AQT, I made this awesome 1x1 texture! Here it is at 360x magnification.
No one has permission to use this in a mod! I worked hard on it.

1x1 would actually still be a power of 2 (as in 1^2). Trying to make a texture to the power of 1 would be impossible, as it would only be one-dimensional. It's dimensions would be something like 256. Or 64. See the problem? One-dimensional figures can't really exist in any concrete form.

Re: Why is everything to the power of 2?
the reason i said to the power of 1 is because i wasn't really thinking well. i was just thinking about if it was to the power of one then you could make things any size. but then anyway i did post this at almost 1:00 O'clock so my math wasn't really the best at that time...

Re: Why is everything to the power of 2?
That would be a power of 1. 2^0, which is equal to 1, is a power of two.Eggman wrote:1x1 would actually still be a power of 2 (as in 1^2).
This isn't about physical dimension but rather the size of a length. Power of 1 values (1^1, 1^2, 1^3, 1^4, and so forth) will always be equal to 1. Hence if all textures were to follow the power of 1 rule, like Dakota was thinking incorrectly, the only dimensions that could be used is 1x1. Now if this was about physical dimension, 512 (2^9), a power of two value, isn't even a perfect square.Trying to make a texture to the power of 1 would be impossible, as it would only be one-dimensional.

Bah, silly me, you're right. Shows how long it's been since I've done any real math since I'm getting my terms mixed up.AQT wrote:That would be a power of 1. 2^0, which is equal to 1, is a power of two.Eggman wrote:1x1 would actually still be a power of 2 (as in 1^2).This isn't about physical dimension but rather the size of a length.
