Ok I have McAffee after Norton went unworkable and uninstallable on me. Anyways yesterday and today McAfee found a backdoor trojan. It cleaned off my computer but had to delete the file to remove it. (don't remember what it is) My question is A. why is McAfee just letting backdoor's just infect my compy without stopping. And B. Where can i get backdoor protection. (free hopefully)

dude, i have avg and my computer is in perfect condition try googleing it, you get a free trial, but it works just as good, and you can have it for how ever long you want

get zone alarm at zonelabs.com. NOrton and Mcaffee and all virus scanners simply wait for proceses to run on your pc that match a known list of names (a.k.a definitions) if you install zone alarm, its a basic firewall appplication for users at the aol noob level all the way to uberhaxxors so its good for anyone wanting to make sure unauthorized access isnt given to any fool who tries to get on your box.

virus scanners are a joke. firewalls are the only way to stop trojans and spybot search & destroy (google it) is a great adware/trojan killer.

A backdoor trojan usually enters the computer through a firewall hole, an infected program, or another file initiates the download of the virus after you run it. Very nasty things.

I recommend Peer Guardian 2 to keep spyware and such off your machine

Funny thing: a couple of months ago, Karnage's Comp was hacked into after he switched over to Norton from another free anti-virus/firewall! Talk about the irony!

Firewalls may block an already installed trojan from connecting to another site, but they do not prevent them from being installed or from being run. If you could only choose one, an anti-virus program is much better than a firewall.

McAfee is not letting trojans onto your computer, you are.

'Real-Time Shields' don't prevent viruses from getting on your computer, they prevent them from running and can remove them from your computer.

For you firewall, use Windows' firewall (assuming Windows XP SP2). Its easy to use and you don't have to install anything. ZoneAlarm can destroy your computer if you attempt to uninstall it. ZoneAlarm was also nice enough to add 4 minutes to my startup time after I installed it (Windows 2003).

If you looking for recommendations, mine are:
Firewall: Windows' (free) or a hardware firewall
AntiVirus: AVG (free)
Internet Browser: FireFox v1.5 (free)

Whatever you decide, make sure to research it first.

Security on a computer is like a block of swiss cheese (the type that has a lot of holes in it) the number one most important thing to maintain PC security, is to Not do any thing stupid – like when u go to download a file, u should have a general Idea of what the size is, if it is over the size or under the general size, don’t get dl it, and also no matter what type of protection you get, it can be Norton’s, ZoneAlarm, McAfee or Kapersky – what ever – Malware will ALWAYS find ways to get into your comp and circumvent Security, that is why they keep making updates and new Virus/Spyware/ and Internet Security Programs. Spyware/Adware and Trojans are pretty ez to remove – the stuff that gets harder to remove are the Root kits, Q7 Rootkits, Logic Bombs, Ligic Bombs (yes there are such things as those –they basically do what the Logic bombs do) there are a lot of variations of these Malware programs – there are a lot of types of “heavy” Malware programs as well, tho the “heavy malware is mainly used when trying to access company computers along with cracking tools – (Not Hacking tools, there is a big difference between hackers an crackers – a cracker is a person who can create Malware and circumvent Security systems, a Hacker is a person who can do all that and much more – they do not sped time causing trouble – instead they fix and repair problems and program and when needed Can crack into a Security system.. just because you can crack a security system does not make you a hacker any more than hot-wiring a car would make u a mechanic.)
Then there are the “worms” depending on what their function is and what they were made to do, the destruction/damage level can be low or high, variations of these programs include – some of the programs after they get onto your computer give the virus/spyware scan a “wrong” reading to make the scanner think it is “ok” one such program is called “Frog Ice” or has a similar name (yes there is a malware program with that name) but these programs do not normally attack the “normal” persons computer – other than try to steal any thing the user has ever entered into his/her computer.

I totally disagree. Windows Firewall offers NO protection against trojan horses. I use Norton Firewall, but you already said you dislike Norton. Zonelab's Zonealarm is free and works well I've been told. Also, Agnutum's Outpost Firewall is free.

Wait. When did i say i disliked Norton? I don't. Maybe you misunderstood me. I had Norton first then something happened with Power Point 2000 so i had to un then re install it and Norton went weird and nonworking on me so I uninstall it then re, but it wouldn't so I went McAfee.
