Gloom Walkers' Call for Modders
Just wanted to throw this out here. A forum website much like this one wishes to make a rather large mod, and would like some help from modders like ourselves. The website is The Gloom Walkers.

I don't understand why they're doing this when wolf man's SWBF3 mod is under development. :S

They want to achieve it themselves, no harm in that right.

Re: Gloom Walkers' Call for Modders
From what I am reading, what they are doing is either a total conversion of the original SWBF2 game into this "SWBF3," or a completely new game made from somewhat scratch and using the Unreal Engine 3, which is what it seems to most likely be judging from this topic of theirs. Also, the job list seems to be lacking right now since it is mainly comprised of ideas people and Star Wars fans as its core.
And from what I am seeing, these guys are merely in the "conceptual art" stage, which is fine, but that is still not a lot of work to show and to show credibility. Also, I've never heard of these guys nor have I seen any of their works for SWBF2, so I'm not certain if I can see this project come into fruition.
Overall, they are welcome to attempt this great feat, but we Gametoast members are merely SWBF2 modders with our own little projects to pursue, not big game makers. Although I don't speak for all of Gametoast, if this were a total conversion of the original SWBF2 game, then sure, we could probably do that and take control over the project while we were at it.
As for me personally, I don't really have the necessary skills to do anything from scratch nor am I interested in this project, but good luck recruiting other potential members, Willinator.

Re: Gloom Walkers' Call for Modders
They are modding swbf2 as a stepping stone to making another game, using the mod as a way to garner interest.

Re: Gloom Walkers' Call for Modders
That's a little pointless, in my opinion. Why not start the actual project already?
Modding SWBF2 is completely different from working with the Unreal Engine... It's a completely different set of skills in a way, and these guys don't seem to know nearly all of the inner and outer workings of SWBF2 already. That is time that could be used to learn the Unreal Engine instead. And whose interest are they trying to gain by doing this anyway? The average Joe Schmo SWBF2 player or "SWBF2 modding experts"? Because it seems they've already attracted enough attention from the former with the idea alone, and I doubt whatever work they produce in regards to modding SWBF2 will grab the attention of the latter, unless it is really brilliant work.

Re: Gloom Walkers' Call for Modders
It's all about time. They don't have nearly enough programmers to get a new game up and running in the amount of time until interest in their community peaks. If they make a mod first, they will recieve more interest from the average player, because they will have a couple people working on the full version at the same time, with the mod saying "This is what's gonna be in our game, plus more."

Re: Gloom Walkers' Call for Modders
I'm with AQT on this one. SWBF2 already has a modding community here. Asking us to dedicate our time and effort on a separate modding site BEFORE starting on this planned project seems a little pointless and more than a little counter-productive. IMO, they should instead start on the project and recruit people by asking to help, building the community through that rather than working on a different project entirely.

If anyone should be crating a huge mod group like this, it should be us. WE ARE the center for Battlefront modding. We are the industry. There's no reason we should take our people somewhere else for something we can do ourselves.

I love how everyone thinks LucasArts is going to just give away the rights to a new Star Wars Battlefront game to a random group of kids.

Re: Gloom Walkers' Call for Modders
What Marth, RogueKnight, AQT, and Twilight Warrior said.
I believe my SWBF3 mod is a reasonable compromise. Using the existing game engine saves heaps of time. Sure, it won't be nearly as good as a real SWBF3. Perhaps not even as good as a fun one made using Unreal 3. The problem is they have NO idea how hard it is to make a game from scratch, especially using UDK. Unreal is powerful, but far from user friendly.
Well I registered. Time to rain on some penguin's parades.
EDIT: Here's what I told them.

Thank you for taking the initiative to speak for everyone here at GT, WULF. Unfortunately, it appears your main argument is "It's illegal," and it looks like it's been brought up before. More than once.

So yeah, I think my course of action is going to be the same as my reaction to anything battlefront3.net related: completely ignore it, roll my eyes at any mention of it, and wait patiently for LucasArt's official announcement. They where selling for profit! WE ARE NOT GOING TO SELL!!!! ONE AND ALL READ MY LIPS WE WILL NOT HAVE LEGAL ISSUES WITH LUCAS!!!!!! SO STOP WORRYING!!!! AND IF WE DO, IT WILL BE A ORDER TO STOP! NO BIGGIE!!!!!! DONT POST ANYTHING MORE ABOUT LEGAL TROUPLE!!!!! READ THROUGH PREVIOUS TOPICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Gloom Walkers' Call for Modders
I was not forcibly asking any of you to go over to their forums and help them. I was merely trying to tell them what can and can't be done, and they asked me to spread the word that they needed help. Also, quite a few people don't actually know about gametoast.

Re: Gloom Walkers' Call for Modders
You're being a little matter-of-fact and a little condescending in your post there. A couple points:THEWULFMAN wrote:Well I registered. Time to rain on some penguin's parades.
-Using the Star Wars license noncommercially isn't illegal provided a court rules that it's falling under fair use. It would be within Lucasarts/Lucas Media's grounds to sue you (or to start those proceedings with something like a takedown notice), but that doesn't mean that you're doing something illegal, it only means that Lucas thinks it might have a court case for your work infringing on their IP. There are any number of Star Wars mods in non-Star-Wars games or any number of fan-build Star Wars games that would seem to give the lie to your infringing argument.
-You've released what, like one map? You've obviously learned a lot subsequently by taking on some larger-scale projects, but going into those projects you had basically no experience. And did you enjoy yourself on the way there? Was it worth it? You seem to be taking the stance with these guys that they should think carefully about starting something big because they might not enjoy it, when you seem to have had the opposite experience. And this point goes for anyone in this thread pooh-poohing people with little experience starting a big project. The quickest way to learn how to do something is by doing it.

I totally agree with what mav has said, you're being somewhat hypocritical considering you did what they are doing and you're now against it? Anyway, regardless of whether they actually finish it or not, I wish them luck and hope they do well.

What? WULF isn't working on a SWBF3 game, but a SWBF3 mod. :SARCTroopaNate wrote:you're being somewhat hypocritical considering you did what they are doing and you're now against it?

I never said he was, I was referring to the fact that he jumped into several large projects with little experience.

Re: Gloom Walkers' Call for Modders
Ah, alright then. Still though, that's just modding. What they're trying to do is a whole new game, not that they shouldn't try or anything, WULF is just telling them to make sure they know what they're getting into.
