What if they did BF2 all over again?
Hey guys,
Just in the theoretical, hypothetical situation that the source code to BF2 was released either to the public or a knowledgeable company, and they decided to do a vast remake on the game, like SWG's New Game Enhancements. What kind of things would you want to see in BF2 like it SHOULD have been? (Note: I'm going to make it clear that this isn't a set of ideas for BF3, but what Battlefront 2 would be like if it had a remake)
Me:
- Increased AI capability; do things like take cover when hit, calculate the best way to confront something, work together, etc.
- Enhanced graphics and capacity for better graphics -- pretty self-explanatory. Could use a little more vivifying graphics to capture the scene of the battle.
- Getting rid of that ANNOYING hp_fire hardpoint at the center, this could be fixed by simply moving the 3rd person camera to the right, and moving the 1st person model a bit. A bunch of games are doing it now, and BF3 almost did it.
- Dual firing capability! This seemed to be especially bothersome if you actually paid attention to the Emperor's lightning source (Lightning doesn't come from the stomach DAAAAAAAANG)
- More malleable game code; makes it easier to put more features in mods and such. Also grappling hook! Woo!
- Bringing back the command interface (Follow me, disperse, get in, etc) from BF1 and improving on it in a similar way to how games made by Valve and some other games have their interface (TF2 probably comes to mind, hopefully there won't be any scout troopers yelling for a dispenser :\)
- Improved class system. The Engineer class is just plain cheap and UNFAIR. There needs to be a way to have the classes work together to help each other.
- Improved Jedi fighting system: Hey, remember that one time on Mustafar where you got to play as Obi-wan, and wanted to try and re-enact the battle from RotS with some dude playing as Anakin? Yeah? And then you got instantly knocked down with a sprint attack and brutally raped from that point on? Exactly. The lightsaber combat system would be somewhat similar to that of TFU or the Episode III game, where an unblocked strike will knock you back a bit (but not knocked down or tripped), but not dealing a big amount of damage (unless a certain part of the combo calls for extra damage), and plenty of time to block given a certain short interval of time (blocking would be done by holding down the middle mouse button, instead of clicking it). You get the general idea.
- While we're on the subject of Jedi combat, there should be a way to combat Force Choke. Perhaps the best way would be like a little meter that you have to keep clicking fast enough to get to the end of the meter, at which point you break free. This would be somewhat tricky for normal players, but rather easy for non-Force using heroes like Han Solo. Force-using heroes could simply use Force Push or something to break free.
- Not ABSOLUTELY necessary, but it would be cool if the units' faces could move and talk. And while we're on the subject of talking, have the AI's speech actually MEANINGFUL ("They're sending in the supers!" "I've got your 6" "They're trying to land their troops!"
Well, that's all I can think of right now. Post your ideas and thoughts!

Before this thread gets locked,
I always felt in addition to most of that,
-Cover system(hiding behind trees, walls, boulders, etc, like in the james bond 3rd person games)
-Robust melee system, i.e. hand-to-hand( like in the james bond 3rd person games)
-Watching yourself get in and out of vehicles( like in the james bond 3rd person games)
-Better Animations.( like in the james bond 3rd person games)
and a few other things
Btw, I think this topic would have been better served as a "what would you like to see in bf3"thread

Let's at least give this a fighting chance and leave those decisions to the staff. If it's locked, it's locked, but hey, it still has a chance.
I would like to see space battles as seen in the demo and trailer. It was my understanding that there was supposed to be a Death Star trench run and normal battles had multiple, fully destructible capitol ships with massive battles both inside and outside the ships.

I have to say though I DO NOT need better graphics. I'm not a visuals junkie and COD4 graphics don't make the game seem any better/worse to me. I am a hardcore gameplay not graphics person and if BF2 had Pac-Man graphics I wouldn't mind.
IMPROVED AI: yes I agree with everyone here. The bots are stupid. But the game is more designed around online gaming so it really doesn't matter.
EDIT: a more complicated award system like in TFU would be cool, one that carried over into the online section too

If that's your mindset, then why even try to incorporate Land->Space integration with SWBF3? "If I wanted a land battle, I wouldn't pick a space map." You have the option to duke it out indoors with the risk of having the entire "map" (ship) blown to smithereens by enemy bombardment (or even friendly if you board an enemy ship) or the option to fly around in the aerial battle and risk losing the interior to the enemy. It'd be better than the vanilla "fly around with hardly any enemies to shoot at or go into the ship and run past everything to blow up key parts because the AI doesn't give you a second glance".
I'm not saying put HUGE interiors with 4 Command Posts inside each one, but a little variety/complexity wouldn't hurt anyone.

The Pandemic developpers had two year to develop SWBF2, if the graphics are the same as in BF1 I think it's intentionnal.

They were slightly impoved. What are needed more than HD Textures, is better shaders, but meh, I am content with bf2 graphics. I am going to sound like a jerk here, but if you hate a game or dont buy it becuase of the graphics, not for any other reason. Thats shallow.[Padawan]Helkaan wrote:IndeedTHEWULFMAN wrote:I Concur :plokoon:CalvaryCptMike wrote: I have to say though I DO NOT need better graphics. Apart from what have been said already, some things I would like to see are better (more realistic) anims, a better HUD, and a new first person sprint anim (not just the walk anim with higher speed) plus rhe ability to aim down sights in fp.
And most important: Mod Tools!

One better, an ingame editor. Something like what they did in Far Cry 2, I think it was.Darth_Spiderpig wrote:And most important: Mod Tools!
Customizable Classes-Not CoD style where you have free reign with the classes and nobody else is likely to have your class, and not Renegade Squadron style either, more like Battlefield or Reach style, where either everyone can choose between a couple of classes and it varies for each person, or like in Reach where the classes can be edited by the player/host outside of the game but are more like Battlefront's current class system ingame.
Improved Engine-Not necessarily Graphics here, but things like better optimization, higher AI capability, and physics. Higher AI counts would mean larger battles and more epic ones, and physics would mean you might actually have to watch where you shoot that rocket or you might launch a crate into some teammates.
Cover-I just like cover systems, there isn't really that much more to it.
I don't know what else I could say, really.

Re: What if they did BF2 all over again?
Better Story: Set the game in a non-canon setting with new characters and don't make the story just a rehash of the movies. The best way would be to include a tutorial level where you play as the CIS, but have the main cast of Clone Troopers or something come in at the end, win the battle in a cutscene, and start from there. Then it does the normal thing of making them join the Empire and then some go for the Alliance and some stay with the Empire, drama, and ending. Much better than "this is what I went through, I forgot the later quarter of the war though."
Custom Soundtrack: Hire someone to make new music for the game. This really helped out The Force Unleashed, and Battlefront having its own tracks that aren't just the John Williams stuff would be quite awesome.
Improved Graphics: Do not make this game brown. I repeat, do not make this game brown. Something similar to the 360 Halo games' graphics would work fine for the Star Wars universe, but something like Call of Duty or Generic Shooter #54 would just kill the visuals. Something like the Old Republic trailer would be great, but I don't know how well the engine would hold that up if you also have to have 16-32 AI with you. Also, keep the movie designs of everything. The Clone Wars designs might seem cool to a few of you now, but the designs aren't really that great for a game like this.
Character Customization: Not like the PSP games. Be able to pick from 32 colors/patterns/legions for all of the factions. When online all of the armors are set to whatever you currently have on your screen and set to whatever the other people have it set to on their screen. That also allows for DLC in the future, as others don't have to be able to read what color something is online.
Classes: Keep them relatively the same, but only have one "special" class per faction, like in Battlefront 1. Make it something that makes sense, like the Jet Trooper having EMPs or the CIS Droid having some sort of toxic weaponry. Oh, and no Droidekas, please.
Space: If space is kept, please make sure that all vehicles have unlimited ammo. Also make sure that if you're going to have weapons that are effected by gravity, please put the planet below the battle on each map. Make the ships have interiors that are more than just three rooms, and have only one critical system inside- the reactor. The goal of boarding the enemy capital ship is to destroy that reactor. The ship will then give a minute to escape and if the team now lacking the ship has not made any progress inside the other ship the game will result in a loss for them. If both go down, the game will end with the team who had the most kills/points winning. No land to space action, as that really hurt some of the maps in Battlefront 3SP
Modding: Far Cry 2 editor, please. Allow for custom models to be imported on the PC edition, but for consoles allow model textures to have color changes and other texture related changes.
Artificial Intelligence: Difficulty does not mean the enemies drop whatever they were doing and only shoot at you. Have some really awesome battles going on in the background and feel like you're helping another person and not a robot who's head occasionally spins around like it's from The Exorcist (anyone else ever had that happen to them in BF2?
).
Maps: Have a poll online to see which 10 maps from past games they should include. Have those at the start and have 5-10 new maps specifically for this game also there. DLC can add whatever it wants later on.
Galactic Conquest: Remake it to have two teams with one leader on each side. The leader decides where to move and the other people on the teams fight it out ingame. The bonuses are still there but you don't have to buy units. Think of it as the ultimate tournament mode, great for clans.

Yeah, John Williams isn't bad, I'm just tired of every Star Wars game having the same music that just plays over and over again on repeat.

Re: What if they did BF2 all over again?
Awesome suggestions guys
Melee System - Yeah, I was thinking something like this. Some sort of button would initiate a melee attack with whatever you're holding---holding down the button would make a slower, but more powerful attack, e.g holding down the melee button + nothing else = bashing attack w/ weapon, but holding down the melee button + left or right would do a hard melee to the side, etc.
Enter/Exit animations - Mmeh, I never really thought this was too terribly necessary. But it would be cool.
Better Animations - OH GOSH YES. And in addition to my command system I mentioned, there should be an animation for each command given. For example, 'Help!' or something, would make the player beckon troops behind him military-style with his hand.
Custom Soundtrack -
. 'Nuff said.
Space - Lol yeah. I always wondered why bombs went 'down' in space. And if the planet isn't below the battle, then technically the capital ships are upside down/sideways.
Maps - Unrelated suggestion, but it would be cool if more than 500 missions was possible.
Galactic Conquest - Oh yeah.
Hey guys, is it alright if I edited my first post to include ideas from you guys? They'd be credited to you of course.
Okay, I think I want to make it clear that this is NOT AN IDEA THREAD FOR BF3. Like the title suggests, this is what we think what could have been put in there if Pandemic was given more time, or if some company decided to remake the game. Now then...THEWULFMAN wrote:-Robust melee system, i.e. hand-to-hand( like in the james bond 3rd person games)

QFT. Except for the massive battles inside the ships...honestly you don't see real-life battleships being boarded to the point where a massive battle ensues on each ship, do you? Nope, they just try to shoot each other down. But yeah, 3 rooms that lead directly to the ships' vital systems aren't very captivating.Twilight_Warrior wrote:I would like to see space battles as seen in the demo and trailer. Ah yeah man, a working system of that would make the game SO much more immersible. Like, if you run out of ammo for your rifle, you could bash some droid/Imp upside the head and take his gun. It would also work nicely for campaigns where the objective is to take some sort of weapon or something.kinetosimpetus wrote:Weapon Drops/Pickups.
I've not been a big fan of customizable classes for team shooters. I mean sure, it would work VERY well if the sides involved were, say, mercenaries (A merc mode would be good too, where someone could have control of what they could and could not equip), but see most of the factions in this game are organized political armies. Meaning each soldier would have a different specialization at what they're best at, in which a class system would function good here. Although, a TF2-style customization would be good. For those who have never played the game, basically you can customize your loadout so the weapons serve basically the same purpose for your class, but they function a little differently (for example 'The Jag' wrench for the Engineer has a 30% faster construction and repair rate, but is not as deadly). Let's just hope nobody starts trading for hats. Also I did mention a more malleable game code, could also work for adjusting servers to ones' liking.Fluffy_the_ic wrote: Customizable Classes-Not CoD style where you have free reign with the classes and nobody else is likely to have your class, and not Renegade Squadron style either, more like Battlefield or Reach style, where either everyone can choose between a couple of classes and it varies for each person, or like in Reach where the classes can be edited by the player/host outside of the game but are more like Battlefront's current class system ingame.
Better Story - I agree the plot needs to be a bit better, although you could still stick to a re-hash of the movies. A tutorial level would be like, you were a clone at the Kamino cloning facility, having a droid voice guide you through several points of the game. You would then play out all the major battles the 501st took part in up to the Empire, and then you would have a turning point in one of the maps where you, a clone, have something happen to you that makes you disillusioned as to what is going on, and then secretly take part in the Rebellion's projects. Then at a map, for example, Yavin or Hoth, you put your stance into action by doing something to help the Red Squadron blow up the Death Star, or delivering a part to Han Solo on Hoth to help his ship escape, etc.Fusion wrote:Hidden/Spoiler:

Improved graphics : high polycount on map like 500k tris , better lights , shadows ...
More AI without laging.
More than 500 missions limit like 1000 or 2000.
