Along with new entries in the Raving Rabbids, Ghost Recon, and Driver series, Ubisoft has revealed that its fiscal year 2010-11 lineup will include a new entry in the Assassin's Creed series - with online multiplayer.
Ubisoft pulled out the big guns today to help make up for the downward financial outlook for fiscal year 2009-10, dropping franchise names left and right in order to paint a rosier picture for the coming year. One of those names is Assassin's Creed, with the next installment featuring online multiplayer - a first for the series.
According to Ubisoft's Michael Beadle, the new standalone game will also see the return of Assassin Creed II's Ezio.
From the press release:
"The 2010-11 fiscal year will see a greater number of franchise releases than fiscal year 2009-10, including Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction, a new game in the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series, Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands, Driver, Raving Rabbids 4 and a new episode of Assassin's Creed, which will be the first in the series to have an online multiplayer mode."
So how do you take a stealth-action game like Assassin's Creed II and make it multiplayer? Put your speculation hats on, ladies and gentlemen, and fill the comment section with your wisdom. I'll start things off: Tag, you're dead.
[UPDATE: A Ubisoft rep confirmed to Kotaku that this new Assassin's Creed will be a standalone game that includes a mutiplayer component. It is not Assassin's Creed II DLC. The rep also told us that Ezio will feature ACII hero Ezio de Auditore]
Like the article said, how do you turn a stealth-action game and turn it into a multiplayer experience?
Just thought this might be interesting to some people. Oh, and Ezio's back.

Multiplayer, intrigues me, Ezio, does not. I'm ready to play full on as Desmond. Plus, it's not like they left the story very open for Ezio, they said in the game that his part in the storyline was done.
I'm considering a "kill the carrier" esque mode, or a mode where each team needs to safeguard one or all members of it's team.
Also, we're too narrow minded about "assassin". For all we know, it could be a WWII reconaissance spy type character, certainly a daring step, and there's also the whole Desmond sub/base plot.
Well, we've just ruled out something pretty crucial. The platform. There have been Assassin's Creed titles before on systems other than the 360, PS3, and PC. For all we know this is a PSP/DS title that just happens to feature mp via wifi. I sure hope thats the case, because I can't see them working Ezio back into the story again for Assassins Creed 3. So Dohnutt, you might wanna change the title to "Next Assassins Creed Title to Feature Multiplayer."
Multiplayer: Win
Ezio: Fail. I was hoping for something along the lines of 300 years or so after Ezio, like American Revolution era or something like that. Ezio's awesome and all, but he just shouldn't have another full game about him.
There is nothing saying he is going to be the protagonist of the game, he could easily just make a cameo like Altair did in Assassin's Creed 2. As for the multiplayer, I am looking forward to seeing where they are going to go with it. They could either make it an epic feature or ruin it completely.
