Sherlock Holmes- Good or Bad?

Post by DarthHamster »

Well judging by the trailer and reviews I think Sherlock Holmes would be worth seeing. EDIT: But maybe Mav is right, its not very much like Sherlock Holmes. Comments?

Eh, after reading the books and seeing the trailer, I don't really think they captured the character's personality in the film. With Sherlock, it's out there, but tolerable. With Watson, it's "who are you and what have you done with the Doctor?"

Who knows, the movie may dispel my impressions.

It looks atrocious. I groan every time I see the trailer - to reinforce my inner terror at this bastardization of the Holmes mythos, I saw an ad on Spike TV this morning for this movie, and it was Downey Jr. saying, essentially "this movie was made for the Spike demographic."

While I love a good trashy action movie as much as the next guy, I'd rather not see them use Sherlock Holmes to be the basis for one.

You would make a good movie critic Mav. :)

Judging by the trailer, they turned into an action/adventure/semi-comedy thing...

I completely agree with Mav. Wouldn't be a bad movie, if they hadn't used the names of Holmes and Watson.

Yeah, stole the words out of my mouth. I only read one of the Sherlock Holmes books but they completely fudged up his persona to turn this into some contemporary stereotypical mindless film. I especially hate how they're trying to make him into some sensual character.

I never really got the impression that Sherlock Holmes was a fighting kind of guy like they make him out to be in the trailer.

Actually his character was fairly proficient in these kind of things (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_H ... rtial_arts), but rarely was there on-"screen" action in the books' stories.

The movie portrays him as - for better or worse - the "character" Robert Downey Jr. Doyle's Holmes isn't the philanderer or the vice-heavy character Downey Jr.'s characters often are - Holmes is more or less constrained only to the vice of using cocaine occasionally (not that this is a small thing, but it is just one thing).

I agree with Mav', they missed the boat completely with Sherlock's character.

I did like the music in the trailer though (It's the song "Unstoppable" by E.S. Posthumus)

I'll see it just for the kicks of the action, and the fact that I like Downey as an actor. At the same time, I know I'll have to allow myself to distance it from the true mythos. A DVD purchase this will not be, but a good popcorn movie for the Christmas break.

To quote my dad:
I Didn't know Sherlock Holmes was an action figure!
While I don't think I'll see it, (mainly because I don't see many movies to begin with), and I don't think it should exist, I agree with Tean, it had a chance of being a great action movie.

And then decided to call the guy "Sherlock Holmes," an ruined both my view of the movie and its respect for literature.

Movies are dead to you because of this? There have been worse movie interpretations of books. At least this looks like its an entertaining action flick though.

this is no movieintrepretation of a book, this is a movie adapting a tiny little bit of the character-constellations of a book-series

after seeing the trailer yesterday i agree with the feneraly opinion- the movie may be not that worst but its NOT a sherlock holmes movie

I'm still excited about this movie. Grant it I have only read one of his books years ago and saw the tv show Sherlock Holmes in the 21st century and that was a little action packed. I'm going into the movie and watching it as a re imagining of Holmes.

Saw the movie yesterday, and I think I'll call it CSI Holmes. I also didn't like how it was more fighting-oriented than you expect a character like Holmes to be, but considering the role that was played, Downey Jr. played it well.

I've read all of the Holmes books, which are all very good. But this looks absolutely nothing like them. For one thing they stayed entirely out of the supernatural realm. No ghosts or raisings from the grave. And they also never even got close to any sort of innuendo situations. It's just out of character. Doesn't fit. Also the Holmes of the books was, disregarding his drug problems, a gentleman. Same thing with Ms. Adler. Based on the preview they are entirely devoid of morals.

And perhaps worst of all it looks like they've turned Holmes from a thinking character into an doing character. In Star Trek terms they took Spock and turned him into Kirk.

I'll probably see this eventually but I'm not expecting much. I would love to see a great book accurate Sherlock Holmes movie. I might be waiting a while though.
