New Graphics Card

Post by timusafa »

Hey all, i'm looking at upgrading my graphics card from an XFX GeForce FX5500 to something with a bit more kick. Relevent Specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (socket 754)
1 GB System RAM
XFX GeForce FX5500 (256mb on board memory)- Also AGP (8x i guess :? ) Integrated 8.1 channel sound
500W power supply

The card I want can be found here: http://www.compuvest.com/Description.js ... iid=303331

Seeing as I want to spend around $60 tops and i need an AGP 8x card, what are people's opinions, suggestions, or reviews about the card. Also, if people see anything better pricewise and they could let me know that would be great :P

Thanks in Advance

As the guy said he as a budget if he gets a pci-e that will mean a upgrade of motherboard which in turn may mean a new harddrive it all depends on how old the machine is....Please think before you put a comment on like this.It is not helpful to Timusafa

I work in pounds not dollars so i guess it translates to about £35/£40 worth of graphics card.
The card your looking at is not much of a jump from your present card.Have you considered a 7 series or try a ATI 1000 series if you can find a good cheap supplier a Radeon x1300 series would be a good choice maybe for a little bit money. This card would make a good upgrade and should see your AGP last longer.
Can you sell your old card on or any old games that will compensate for a bit more spending power..??

Ok i googled a little and this what i got after 5 minutes so you may find it cheaper GOOD LUCK!! http://store.pagecomputers.com/store/pr ... b_overview

hey, thanks alot for the help moon, I haven't used ATI processors so I don't know how to compare them with Nvidia processors. I'll have to look into that. And thinking about future investment, I was originally looking at the Nvidia 6800. Any comments on that?

Thanks, you help is appreciated! :P

Some people swear by ATI and AMD together

*What i did today*
I too have only just upgraded my pc and have a sempron 754 board. But looking to the future i decided to go a different route.Rather than spend money on a ageing agp board i invested in a pci-e board http://www.asrock.com/product/K8NF6G-VSTA.htm (£27 British pounds)

This board is a754 pin so your CPU will slot in no probs. It is Sata II which may require you to invest in a Sata II/Sata300 (£25)harddrive(this is a step up).It as a nvidia 6100 built in which i know is not much of a graphics jump from your previous card(saving on a new graphics card until a later date). All this should slot into your case Then there is the potential for a PCI-E card at a later date. The PCI-E cards run at 16x-AGP 8x so there is a step up also the PCI-E cards tend to be cheaper than AGP for the same card

Helpful sites into choosing right graphics

looking ahead i stuck a nividia 7600gt sli in the pci-e slot which means the only thing i will have to invest in a couple of years time will be another motherboardAM2 and cpuAM2 when they too will be cheaper by then.Stick another 7600gt sli in and BINGO!!

It is a good alternative than just sticking a new expensive card into a ageing AGP motherboard

Sorry if I seemed short, I was just asking why he would go for AGP over PCIe.

He didn't say that he was AGP only, he said he wanted an AGP card, and also that he wanted peoples opinions:

I was just curious, I wasn't trying to be rude. I'm sorry if I came off that way.

Maybe because AMD owns ATI?
