Aiming laser?

Post by MileHighGuy »

well im trying to make an aiming laser that will attach to a weapon's hp_fire, and fiodis gave me 2 ideas
Fiodis wrote:Oh, an aiming laser. Well, that's a cool effect and I'm surprised no one's thought of this before.

The way I see it, there are two good ways to do it:
1. Make an effect, red (or whatever color) with the geometry of a long, narrow cylinder. This will make the beam visible in the air, but it will pass through objects and, after a certain length, it will just stop.

2. Attach a custom light ODF to the weapon's hp_fire via an odf line. This will have the "laser pointer" invisible in the air, but it will show up as a red dot on the target. It won't pass through objects, it will stop and make a red dot on them just like a real laser pointer, and it will (in theory) go on forever, though I'm not sure how well the length will actually be in-game. Also, as a side effect, the farther away an object is, the bigger the dot will be, so you'll have to tailor the dot accordingly: mid-range for a rifle, short-range for a shotgun, long-range for a sniper's rifle, etc.

You know, I really like the sound of #2, it would fit in perfectly for something I have planned. I hope you won't mind if I borrow that idea. But that's of course assuming light odfs can be attached to a weapon instead of a static prop, I'm not sure it's allowed by the game.
#2 gives the effect i want, but im not sure its possible either

#1 would be okay but i cant make msh's, is an effect geometry different than a msh?

#2. is not possible.

#1. Yes, the effect geometry is the same as a msh. But it should be easy for someone to make you such a msh.

Aww....I liked number 2. :( I assume lights can only be attached to static objects?

Yes, making an effect mesh like that would be easy.

Coulda sworn that Frag attached a light to a unit before. Either that or he attached a light to an addon msh that was on a unit. Something along the lines of that.

Yes, it works on unit's but it doesn't illuminate, which wouldn't really be a problem here.
You can't attach a light to a gun though.

What do you mean it doesn't illuminate? It shines on whatevers in front of it, right? It makes a red spot?

I mean it won't make the environment brighter. like a flashlight or anything.

You can attach effects to units, so you could try it. It would be hard to align the effect I think.

Yeah, what I would do is find out which bone the hand is attached to and make an addon, try to line it up with whatever gun you're using, and set it so that it's attached to the gun hand, since the gun hand animates with the hp_weapon on the skeleton, I believe.

Actually, try just attaching an effect to hp_weapon. Might not work, but it would be fast to test.

Yeah, but I assumed that if he's gonna have a laser sight, he's gonna want a laser sight model, too. And I guessed that he couldn't attach an addon to hp_weapon.

And even with all this, what you'll get is a rifle with a red stick on one end.

Of course, it'll be a fancy stick. But a stick nonetheless.

I KNOW that Frag made a flashlight for a clone troopers pauldron that illuminated the area. Its in his photobucket videos.

Or you could just edit the weapon msh, it's not impossibly hard, just attach a long, thin red cylinder where you want the laser.

Ok well this probably wouldent work but im throwing out here. What of you made a secondary weapon with the same geometry as the weapon with the sight, gave it an ordnance similar to the turrets on kasyyyk or the rep tanks second position. Then when you hit the secondary fire button you would shoot the lazer and it would stick to the hp i think.

Or, you could even make it a secondary ordnance so that every time you fired your primary weapon it would fire a laser that does no damage along with the normal ordnance.
This might work, if you were constantly holding down the trigger, but the model idea would still function better, I think.

What if you used a secondary ordanance so that you could shine a lazer ( you could use tweaked ray gun) with that( right click and hold down) and then shoot with left click. So its like * hold right click and aim for someones head* *left click and shoot*.

It was the grenade that illuminated the area not the flashlight. I had a topic on flashlights not too long ago and he explained it to me.

That flashlight-pauldron you're talking about was an effect, which sadly don't light anything up.

EDIT
MasterFang1 wrote:What if you used a secondary ordanance so that you could shine a lazer ( you could use tweaked ray gun) with that( right click and hold down) and then shoot with left click. So its like * hold right click and aim for someones head* *left click and shoot*.
Or....

Say that your rifle was chargeable. Yes? Then, you set the "Long Red Stick" effect as the charge effect, sorta like Carth Onasi's Sniper Shot in the Convo Pack. Result: you hold left-click, and a red aiming laser builds up from the barrel. Then you aim as you wish, and release. A shot is fired along the length of the laser and the laser disappears.

Pluses: The laser doesn't stick around forever on the tip of the barrel, being annoying. It is visible in the air, and makes for a really cool aiming effect.

Minuses: It goes through objects, if it's long enough.

I think I like this idea best of all the ones so far presented. I'll get to work on the chargeup effect and see what I can do.
