Games that would make great XBLA/PSN titles

Post by Teancum »

I've been playing a lot of XBLA lately, and I've realized a lot of titles circa 1995-2002 are making comebacks as "arcade" titles. The games just don't have a big enough scale to be full-out on-disc titles, but remakes or just straight ports would be awesome. XBLA is great for me, because as a dad I don't get chances to game for long periods of time very often, which is what disc titles really need.

Some of my thoughts:
  • Crazy Taxi - Already coming to XBLA, and that'll be awesome.
  • Star Wars Episode I Racer - Give this a facelift and call it simply Star Wars Podracer. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
  • Halo 1 or 2 - Not so much arcade, but updated with full 360 Xbox live capabilities. I'd have the whole series on one system then.
  • Jedi Knight - The original, though. Not Outcast or Academy. The original was where it was at.
  • X-Wing Alliance - I know most people prefer TIE Fighter, but it's all the same series, and everything from the older games has been made compatible with XWA via mods, so it'd be the perfect fit. Release XWA, then use it as an engine for DLC versions of TIE fighter, X-Wing, and X-Wing vs TIE Fighter
  • Rampage: Total Destruction - had this on the GameCube back in the day. GC discs are 1.7gb, so we know it's under to 2gb max for XBLA. It was a GREAT budget title, and I'd gladly pay 15.00 for it.
  • MechWarrior - any of em' -- not a huge fan, but it seems like it'd be a great fit.
  • Full Throttle - Monkey Island is great, but Full Throttle NEEDS to be the next updated port. They've already got people doing Sam and Max (actually, I think they sold the IP), so logically this needs to be next.
  • Unreal Tournament "Arcade" - UT3, though good is just too much to be interesting. Trim down the game, make it more like UT99, release it as an arcade budget title.

I don't have an Xbox, but I do think those are some good choices. If Dark Forces was added, that would be cool, too. Yeah, it was a Doom clone, but it was able to add things that we take for granted today - like multiple floor levels, for instance.

It also had some other very cool advantages like a story (thing that is still missing in most modern shooters, of course if you dont take stories like "we're good, they are bad, lets kill'em all" seriosly) and StarWars setting.

^^Agreed. I think that might be one of the reasons I found it hard to like Halo.
