RE: Building a website

Post by Dohnutt »

Hm, this might be made using a CMS (Content Management System), but maybe not.
If you wanna learn in-depth HTML, then read this:
http://www.davesite.com/webstation/html/
I bought a book to learn HTML, and I was much more interested in it than reading a webpage.

Anyways, if you just wanna make a quick website, some good places to go are http://www.freewebs.com, or http://www.tripod.com. Many people use those. I find Freewebs is better than Tripod, but I haven't used both in a very long time...

[EDIT]
Also, if you'd like to learn PHP (a more advanced website-programming language), go here:
http://www.goodphptutorials.com/categor ... d-beginner
Once again... I find books easier to understand, and more interesting, but that's just me..

Well, dohnutt, i have made a site on freewebs, but i want my own domain name, so it will be easier for people to get to it, and they won't have to type as much. And, i'll look on postnuke, Thanks you guyz!

*EDIT*

Okay, I've downloaded postnuke and all the required software, but, can you sort of tell me how to use it. I am a beginner with this, and it's sort of confusing.

1. You need a webspace. If you want a domain name, it's gonna cost you. Unless of course, someone buys you one. :P Hey, don't look at me...
2. Once you have your webspace, go onto your FTP site. It should be at ftp://ftp.yourdomainname.com
3. Find some tutorials for Postnuke. Follow them
4. If you followed them right, then congrats.

Heh. You didn't get it, did you?
OK, what I meant by that link was that... Wait, I'll explain it from the beginning

1. If you really want a website, you can either:
- Find a free host, such as http://www.freewebs.com
- Buy your own website, with your own domain name, such as http://www.simplehost.com (It's what I use), or http://www.godaddy.com

2. Once you've got a website host, you should just play around with some things, to see what they do. Just to kind of introduce yourself to the host. If you've bought a website, you'll find out that you have a Control Panel. Your host will most likely show you where it is. If your host has not yet told you, feel free to e-mail them with your question. My cpanel is located at http://www.gamechief.net/cpanel., so yours will most likely be there. (Except, you'd replace the "gamechief.net" with your domain name. You'd also get an FTP, which is pretty much where all your files are kept on your host's server. You will be able to access these at ftp://ftp.domainname.com, but once again, you'd replace "domainname.com" with your domain name. Once you got your FTP, you'd be able to choose a password/username in which you can log in with.

3. Then you could start creating your website with HTML, or whatever your choose to use. If you're gonna use PostNuke, then I'd reccomend reading a tutorial, such as this one:
http://community.postnuke.com/Wiki-UserDocs.htm
It basically has everything you need to know about PostNuke installation, and managing.
By the way, "HostNuke" is just a website host. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with PostNuke.

4. Once you've got your PostNuke all set up, you'll start editing it, and tweaking it, until it's perfect. You'll add new themes, and modules... But you'll learn that in the tutorial.

That's all!
If you choose to use a free host with PostNuke, then don't use FreeWebs. It doesn't support Post Nuke. Just search "free postnuke hosting" or something like that, and I'm sure you'll be fine.
And remember, buying a website isn't always the best choice. This is mostly because... well, you're only making it for a clan website. Buying a website will cost you a minimum of $100/year. I pay about $120/year for my website. Personally, if I were you, I'd find a free host.
Hm, never thought of this before, but I'd be happy to host your site if you want. Your domain name would be http://www.yourdomainname.gamechief.net (And, once again, the "yourdomainname" would be changed to your selected domain name).

So... How 'bout it?

(Wow, this has got to be the longest post I've ever made

MOVED TO TECHNICAL ADVICE

What do you mean screwed it up? Are you talking about the files?

If you want a little practice editing a site before actually uploading it to a public site of your choice (Freeweb or a paid host), there is a program suite that is called WAMP.

Goto http://www.wampserver.com

On an external public site, you need php and mySQL abilities inorder to run the vast majority of CMSes, so your public host will have to have that installed on their server. Now clarify the above a little so I can see if I can help.

Well, by screwed it up, i mean, i probably put the files in the wrong place, which is most likely why none of it's working right now. I have php and mySQL, but, i don't think i put those in the right places either. Where should I place all of these files?

Are you running this locally on your own machine or uploading it to a webhost?
PieDude797

Post by PieDude797 »

umm, well, i'm planning to use postnuke, if that's what you mean by webhost, and, if that's not what you mean, then, can you explain it to me? I'm kinda new to this.

A webhost is a site that will host your website and domain, usually for a price. Like what you see when you goto gamtetoast. The CMS is like the actual content of the website itself, which postnuke is considered. What you see now it the content. Think of a webhost like a home and the content like the funiture. The home is hosting the funiture. The funiture can change from time, but the basic materials of the house stays the same unless renovated. Now "materials" of this "house" you want to "live in" must be built on MySQL and PHP (walls and bricks) before you can put your content and your CMS (if you forgotten, furnature) on the host's computer (House). So unless you have a webhost with MySQL and PHP already installed, you won't be able to run Postnuke. Still confoosin'?
PieDude797

Nope. Not confusing at all. So then, I will be having a webhost. I'm just confused on when i download the MySQL, PHP, and PostNuke of where to put the files.

ask your webhost if they have current versions of php and mysql installed so you can run postnuke. Its easy , upload the files, use the pre made installer and fill in the blanks. Most people can setup a postnuke site in about 5 minutes. If you need mysql or php install help check with your "WEBHOST" as they are all different in hundreds of way.

Like I said... simplehost.com, godaddy.com are good ones. But you have to pay.
I also said that if you want, I'd host it for you. Why don't you read my posts...

*smacks head on desk*
READ IT AGAIN!
In my post on the first page, I said that GoDaddy was good, BUT you have to pay. And when I say you have to pay, I mean like $100 (at the least) per year. You really gonna pay that much for a clan website?
