Custom Sides

Post by Wonderboy »

I am new to modding and was trying to understand how to setup custom sides. I read Caleb's tutorial, and I seem capable of doing the .req files and the .lua scripting. But I was confused while copying and pasting the odfs, msh etc. I was trying to place a snowtrooper in my custom side. I copied all the snowtrooper msh files and then I went to copy its odfs. There I found only one file, and it was for the snowtrooper skirt.
-Is that all I have to copy then?
-Must I copy and effects for the units weapons, and copy the sprites in the munged folder?
-Also, do I have to copy the units wep odfs?
-And one last question, in the odf folder there are files for default troops. What msh files do I copy?
Thanks in advance. :)

My advise to you is, get to know the basics of modding before you get into the tough things like sides. Read up on the Everything You Need thread: http://www.gametoast.com/forums/viewtop ... 27&t=13806

Make a map that plays good and is not very complicated, before you start doing all the complicated stuff. I wish I had someone tell me that when I first started out. You can't just make a super-duper map right away, it takes practice and a lot of reading.

Now to answer your questions, where did you pull your .msh files from? You should be getting them from: C:\BF2_ModTools\assets\sides\imp\msh. An example of an Imperial skin is: "imp_inf_trooper.tga".

You do have to copy your units weapons .odf's. Everything that has to do with the characters you are putting in game, has to be in your sides folder. Including your .odf's, .msh's, .tga's and .req's.

To answer your last question, (someone correct me if I'm wrong) you should be taking the "imp_inf_rifleman.odf".

EDIT: Oh whoops, you want Snowtrooper. Never mind my last bit, take "imp_inf_snowtrooper.odf".

EDIT2: Whoops again, "imp_inf_rifleman_snow.odf". :|

I guess your right, I didn't realize how hard it was. But here's something simpler. I am trying to just simply change the sky. I did the kashyyyk sky for practice as the tutorial said. I copied kas2.sky to my world1 folder and renamed it to MAP.sky. Then, because i am unsure how to open a file to search for assests, I went into world2 in the kashyyyk files and copied and pasted everything that had sky2 in its name into my world1 folder. It did not work. Do I change those files to include MAP in there name too?

This is off-topic and probably against the rules but oh well hahah. I recommend Fierfek's tutorial on this one.

Even skies are a little complicated. Who would think? :P
If you really need help on it, post a new topic, but really read that tut its a life saver.

Alright then, I will. It was 25mb so i was going to wait. Does that include how to show CPs in ZE. Because I would like to see them but currently I am only able to see one at a time.

If you mean the highlighted blue that shows up when you click on an object, they are all there and it may just be easier to click the regions tab in the group of buttons up the very top of the window. Objects is allready picked and you click the one below it saying Regions... This way it kinda pinpoints your cp's for you so you can see them....

And sorry if im WAY off on this :P

If I had a guess it would be you haven't learned how to use the layer controls in Zero Editor.

When you change the sky file, you need to do a clean then remunge or else the sky will not show up.

No, you don't. Or, more specifically - you might have had to before, but changing the sky does not necessitate a clean. No change necessitates a clean; cleaning is never necessary.

That's just how the command post objects are set up to appear in ZE. They're all there, but they're difficult to see because they're small and translucent. If you zoom in close enough you'll be able to see them.
