most of the time i actually like the yavin textures, the nice sunset skybox, the fancy rocky and stone tile thing textures, the grass. i find it quite nice for certain purposes, like making rocky river beds or mountains or nice grassy areas. i'm just wondering why people started disliking them and how they got such a bad reputation.

Yavin texture question.
i was just wondering: why do people dislike the yavin textures so much?

Re: yavin texture question.
I think it has to do with the fact that the uneditted mod map in bf2 is a flat terrain with a Yavin texture and sky. And many maps either choose to use the ground texture (so they don't have to worry about changing it) or keep the sky. And it becomes a very repetitive sight.

Because they look like the aftermath Gabe Newell having a bit of a spill...
Nah, but4srs, they literally look like vomit. It may be the lighting and fog and such, but they just don't look very good.

I don't see any harm in using Yavin's textures and I don't think they are overused at all. They work well with some environments and should or could be used whenever the situation calls for it.

I agree with Ace. A good example is one of the Yavin ground textures was use pretty effectively in Era's Tibrin: Island map from Dark Times 2.

Re: Yavin texture question.
The only Yavin texture I don't like is this one. It's one that should pretty much be avoided at all costs. It's really low resolution and it's used way too much.
The rest are fine. Matter of fact I really like a lot of the Yavin textures.

I don't have a problem with people making conscious the choice to use them, but I hate when people keep it because they're too lazy to change it.

Re: Yavin texture question.
You know, I noticed that lots of people say they are over used but I rarely can find maps that use them. Maybe I just don't download maps that look like the author was lazy and just put yavin grass on his new geonosis and the spire map.

If you've seen one map like THIS, you've seen all the maps that are full of "beginner mistakes." One of the biggest beginner mistakes is not changing the default sky, which is by far the most common offender. Not changing the flat terrain is a close second, but it's a lot more rare. Not changing the default 4 CP positions is next on the list, not common, but not really rare either.
Then coming in at 4th is not changing the default terrain texture. It's the resolution of that green grass that I can not stand. I'm someone who likes terrain textures to be 1024x1024, not 256x256. That's is just plain sad, most stock textures are 512x512.

Re: Yavin texture question.
