How to skin?

I'm sorry but I searches every where in the forum but I didn't understand how to skin.
I had download GIMP for skinning. But when I skin a droid like the droid rocketeer
there was every time a error:

When you go to save, make sure you choose "save as." When you see the appropriate checkbox, UN-check RLE compression.

Wait, so theres no need to make a new one, then copy/paste it in, then save it again? So just save as on the original?

If you've edited a skin, just save it as the original name (and no RLE compression).

The reason people is say they don't work, is because they:
a. haven't put in the time to do and understand them, and want someone else to do it, but then take credit.
b. because they haven't actually read the tutorials.
