SWBFViewer crashes when viewing modified texture [Solved]

Post by yoyoman »

I used the anyone can do skins tutorial to modify a side character in gimp. I just added some color and one decal. I saved it then tried to view it in sbf viewer but when I do it crashes. In the tutorial it says :
11. To see it quickly, what I do is to create a new folder, and I paste the models I want to test, for example:
Rep_inf_ep3trooper.msh – this is the model.
Rep_inf_ep3trooper.tga – This is how the texture must be called so the model will read it.
Remember to uncheck RLE compression, otherwise it won’t work.

1. where do you put the new folder?

2. where do you find the place to uncheck RLE compression?

3. I have never done this before. What is making it crash? Could it be that I didn't uncheck the RLE compression thing, or make a folder in the right place?

Thanks for putting up with all my questions.

You'd have to put them in the same structure as a regular side.

1. Wherever you can find it quickly. I'm usually use the Desktop, then browse to it with the MSHViewer.

2.When you click on "Save as" in gimp, a popup will pop up and there is the box where you have to uncheck RLE.

3.Most likely the RLE crashes it.

i think hes talking about a sidefolder because hes asking if putting it in the wrong place can cause a crash

I think he is talking about he wanted to view his new skin in MSHViewer, it crashes and he wasn't sure what it crashes, either a possible wrong location of the folder containing the model and the skin or the RLE on. :?

well, now that you are pointing it out it makes sense. i suppose the "side" in the title made me think he wanted to view a custom skin with custom side ingame

Yes yes yes! It is not crashing anymore! It was the RLE compression. Thank you very much.

A good rule of thumb, nevereverevereverEVERever give your .tga files RLE compression.

Sigh  . It doesn't work if you check it. Please read the tutorials. All these questions could be answered if you would just read it.

he already knows that, he learned it right in this thread.

if you want to know the reason why it crashes when ehcking the compression: battlefront (and obviously swbfviewer too) are built for older types of .tga files, which dont the compression. So if you check it the tga is saved in a newer version of the filetype and swbf and the viewer dont understand that (as far as i know)
