Altered Sagas Campaign

Post by Astute »

Well, i'm deciding on getting back into the whole modding thing, simple as that. While i had a lot of work done on my old maps, really hoping to start fresh with a new idea and mabye release my old maps later. My idea is focused around the CIS during the clone wars, really i felt that they were underdogs even though they had many destructive weapons(which most were not featured in the later movies, ex. ATT). Instead of starting with multiplayer maps, i'm going to look into do a campaign instead, and setting up the battles as if the CIS had made the first strike in the war, and eventually started to gain an advantage against the republic. Maps may include levels like a more detailed Geonosis with the CIS have defenses set up ahead of time, or even a level as far out there as the Burning of Theed. I also hope to feature many different armies, with a constantly changing selection of units for both sides, such as one level you play as CIS against naboo/republic forces, and the next wookiee, etc.

Haven't finalized when it will be done, or even when i start on it. Still looking into level design and story, as well as how the maps will be laid out according to events. Just thought i'd throw that out there, still will be some time before i organize all my ideas.

Theed should have been burned a long time ago. Didn't Nute Gunray read Machiavelli's The Prince? Besides, the place was ruled by a little girl, for crying out loud! If only Anakin didn't... but now I am getting into your alternate reality thing.

Sounds like you've got quite an alternate-reality Clone Wars set up. Good luck with getting back in gear.

Yeah, thinking of doing some different style levels, and delving into siege type maps with the republic being assaulted by wave after wave of CIS, and vise versa. some of the maps i'm looking into are
>Geonosis: Personally, i don't like the Geo in battlefront, it makes for a difficult fight for the CIS. Instead, i'm going to mix up the layout a bit, but less focused on the spire.
>Rhen Var: I'm too much a fan of rhen var to leave it out, the map will most likely be the republic defending an undergroud base, with one canyon in the middle and sub zero water below, like the ice caps
>Dathomir: Since this planet was never really featured in.. well any star wars game (SWG i think is the only), i've decided to have a dark battle here, mabye canyons with trees and such, mostly uphill battle.
>Kamino: Obviously there would be a battle at kamino, not sure what approach to take, though looking into making an underwater map where elite CIS battle droids sabatoge one of the supports on the facility
>Naboo: As mentioned above, it just wouldn't be a CIS victory without the nemodians taking revenge, this level will likely feature a black sky with burning and destroyed buildings, mabye east side of the city. Will feature republic forces at least, and maybe a mix of naboo security forces as well.
>Kasyykk: Since a battle on kasyykk takes place is ep 3, decided to revisit it, mabye a high up in the tree tops battle, representing what most of kasyykk is dominated by, trees.
>Any other levels may be subsitituted later...

While all of these levels haven't been finalized, thought i might feature them now so i don't steal anyones ideas. These levels will rely heavily on locals to represent a larger CIS force, such as extra battle droids attacking from another position. Since you'll be playing CIS most of the campaign, I'll try to mix up the selection for each level. I also hope to incorporate scale into the map, giving you a sense that your just a small soldier on a large battlefield(ex. Tall trees of kasyykk). Some story may be modified to include certain key jedi. With all planets considered, Coruscant will be left out, since i don't want to steal any of Rends ideas/designs.

Well, thats a summary, right now i'm working on getting the geonosis sky shot so i can examine the map as a whole.

Sounds good! I'm a HUGE CIS fan. It'd be awesome if somehow someone could create a mod that allows regular Galatic Conquest to be played with mod maps. That'd be the greatest IMO.

Good to hear, seems like i've run into some problems, most notably my CD is messed up so i can't reinstall battlefront. Will probably have to order a new one :(. As for the modded campaign, i'm thinking there has to be a way considering i've found specific files noted as "historic".

Yes, i am aware that they were never released(partially due to lack of interest), which is quite terrible considering they were my favorite units :(. However, they will not be scrapped, its just i'll have to find another level to put them in(old level sucked horribly). As for my naboo map, i'm unsure. To sum it up, Naboo Coastal Battlegrounds started to develop problems about the time i finished it, such as sound and texture problems. The map itself worked fine, but with its problems, it made the experience somewhat annoying. Was thinking if i started fresh on another project mabye i could find the solution to my old maps while working on the new(since their errors drove me from modding in the first place).

Well, i've ordered a replacement cd for battlefront, hopefully it will get here in a week or so. Until then i'll just plan out my maps(wish i had the height maps from the editor though).

Due to the fact that battlefront 2 is on the horizon, i'm a bit reluctant to start modding and have it become obsolete by the time i get even halfway finished. I'll hold off to see what the verdict is on it, such as whether or not i can transfer to BF2 instead.

Well, I think that might be a good idea. As much as I'd want to see this come out soon, it may be better just to wait, so as you can take your time making this for BFII when it comes out instead of trying to rush and get it out before BFII. And it'd probably be better still, since BFII will have many new features to take advantage of (such as the sprint feature, which will allow you to make even bigger maps without really having to worry about not being able to get around fast enough).

But, I have an idea for something you could do; Mon Calamari. Think about it. If you could somehow make a type of Scuba Trooper for the Republic like in the CW cartoon, then you could make kind of a combination of an underwater and island battle, with battle ships and everything (if I'm not mistaken, I think you figured out a way to make boats... correct?) I don't know, just a suggestion. But there's so many possibilities. You could have Scuba Troopers and Mon Calamari soldiers for the Republic (and, if possible, Kit Fisto as the hero), and maybe some Quarren warriors and some special variants of battledroids suited for underwater combat and stuff for the CIS. It could turn out to be a really great map, if done right.

But it's just an idea. Sure, not all of it would be possible (like making the Quarren/Mon Calamari/Kit Fisto models), but I'm sure it could be done in a way that would really make it a great map. But the whole idea of remaking some of the battles with the CIS as a huge threat to the Republic is a great idea. I've found that the CIS are the underdogs in this game, and nobody really seems to pick the CIS... (I find that extremely annoying when I'm the only one playing as a droid on a server while everyone else is a jet trooper...)

A water/land transistion map is a cool idea, however Mon Calamari plays a minor role in the war. I'll be focusing more on the major planets such as kamino and geonosis, basically vital to the victory of either side. I'll have to remember that though, a map where you could fight underwater with a spear gun, and surface to fight with a pistol would be worthwhile.

While i wait, i've been weaving the story of the altered saga. I hope to feature maps from ep1 - ep3, and mabye even beyond that (ep4-5). It will be the same story at heart, but some things such as darth maul surviving his fight in ep1 and anakin turning on the emperor in ep3. Also considering saving lives as well, and possibly intergrating them in a final level, example being 3 sith heroes(anyone from maul to vader) leading the troops into battle as well as twists to heroes allegiance(ex. Vader leading Cis troops).

As for the war's story, In ep2, i really feel they undermined the CIS with the whole arena fight scene. Seriously, if you capture one guy, and another comes to rescue him, don't you think that the second guy probably have phoned for help? I can see that the CIS wouldn't have known about the clone army.. but they would have at least factored in the jedi council.

My altered Geonosis map will feature a much more prepared and defensive CIS, using geography to their advantage, as well as Republic reckage and aircraft dotting the landscape

btw, i did get boats, they just wouldn't float in the right direction lol.

Well after playing the battlefront 2 beta i'd have to say i'm quite impressed, the game looks and plays a lot more streamlined than before, So i've decided to wait on any mods so i can start fresh should i be able to mod battlefront 2(which i hope). So in the mean time i'll be heading back to work on my old projects, Rhen Var: Frozen Corridor and Naboo: Coastal Battlegrounds. Miraculously, when i came back to RVFC, i found that everything worked like it was suppose to, yet when i had left it, it had serious errors. Since i haven't talked about this map, it was basically my main project, but was side tracked working on NCB when i got frustrated with RVFC. Besides the errors, my obsession with Rhen var architecture slowed me down enormously, you'll see in the pics below.

The overview of rvfc is basically the sequel to my first map, i did start small, but it kinda grew into something huge. Bascially the story goes that imperial troops are having little luck at the gate, so the trek through a much more hazardous pass in order to flank the defending rebels. However half way through they come upon a sith ruin that has been recently fortified by the rebels.

The Above two are of the sith temple, where i spent most of my time. Its composed of about 4-5 different locations within and around the temple such as the main room(seen above), the basement chambers, the crypts, the observatory, and the terrace, all of which are available to foot soldiers.

While you can't see them in the pics, i've included a number of features that i've talked about before, and others i haven't mentioned.
> Storm Nova Commando
> Trap system(yep, it works)
> runes that function as healing and ammo regens.
> explodable walls
> as and extention, all of the explodable walls lead to secret chambers within the level, most of which that have strategic or health/ammo benefits.

Well i best get back to work, if i have any cool pics of the Nova or trap systems i'll post.

Really, besides the coolness, i don't really see a point to play as the nova. Having already played as him, i know how difficult he is to control. Originally I had designed the nova to be an equal force to vader, by giving him a terribly inaccurate and slow rifle, but only because he could kill from range. In fact, even his aim was quite low, so when testing him, after one shot every shot afterward would be some 20 meters off with each fire, making it impossible to kill even small groups of enemies. However, when i faced off against ai, his skill was incredible. Able to run through rocket, cannon, and even grenade fire, as well as score headshots 95% of the time from impossible ranges, he was quite a powerful force. In fact, i was testing him on this very map and instead of attacking rebels head on, he flanked/killed off our guys spawning on the other end of the map and captured our main spawn.

What is even more odd about this? I have tested his weapon and even his template on other ai but they die quite easily with little fight. This is why i hope that if i ever get this map released, the SNC will mean more than just some ai hero, but an actual force to be reckoned with. At this point i'm not really sure what happened with the ai, but i still get chills when i get stared down by him moments before i'm gruesomely headshotted :)

However, while you can't play the nova, you can still play as a storm commando.

Astute, this looks really good. I never have enough patience for rhen var architecture. There are just too many peices.
