Sorry. Cryengine 2 wins. Anyone who's used the editor will have to agree.

Re: What`s the best Game Engine
The Pandemic engine is actually called "Zero".
Right now I'd have to say Ronin is one of the more impressive ones. I'd like to see what they do with the next game the build on it. Other than that my other favorite is an old engine called SITH, used on Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, Mysteries of the Sith, Droid Works, and Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. The rendering code was also updated and used in Grim Fandango.

I'm gonna have to say Ronin, then ZeroEngine. TFU is incredible, and BFI and BFII are pretty much my all-time fave games.

Actually the Source engine is a highly modified DOOM engine with Havok physics added.
Did you guess my vote?

Re: What`s the best Game Engine
I still think CryEngine is the best..
1. CryEngine 2 - Extremely realistic if you have a good PC, and even in low settings it looks amazing!
2. Source Engine - Very Well composed, makes a game for feel like you just stepped into the real world.
3. Unreal Engine - When I first saw it, it was a drop dead stunner, gives a game just the right feel.

Re: What`s the best Game Engine
When it came out, the Source engine was THE best engine out there, no questions asked.
While it still is a very competitive engine, some of the newer ones show just as much promise as Source did in 2004.
The Unreal Engine series is still one of the more broad-reaching engines, supporting many different types of graphical/physics effects.
CryEngine2 is, at this point, the most impressive engine today in terms of graphics, especially now since it has been upgraded for use in Crysis Warhead to be faster and more efficient.
It's extremely comprehensive editor is also one of its more compelling features.
Ronin by itself isn't all that impressive; what made it so fun in TFU was the addition of the third-party engines such as Euphoria, Havok, and Digital Molecular Matter (DMM).
So all in all, I would have to agree with NullCommando, but I'm not quite entirely sure about the order.

Re: What`s the best Game Engine
I made me my own trap with 3 Votes.
Actually i like nearly All of the Top 10 Engines.
To vote is very hard but thats what i think
1.Scimitar
2.Dunia
3.Infinity Ward
If i could vote 4 Times.
Lithtech 2.0/Jupiter/Triton Engine from Developer Monolith for some absolute great old Shooter from the Years 2000-2004
Actually this Engine is also in use in FEAR & Combat Arms.
At Place 1 is Scimitar because i loved AC.The Graphic blowed me away when playing it for the first Time.
It doesnt look so real like in Dunia or Cryengine2 but you fell like in an Medieval History Lesson.Thats what i loved and the Gameplay and handling is also very well done.
Dunia on Place 2
CryEngine2 looks absolute awesome but Dunia looks better,Trust me,Guys.Ok.The Combat and the Explosions in CryEngine2 looks best and the Playersystem is better to handle.
The only Reference for me is Farcy2 PC (not PS3 or Xbox -) doesnt look very impessing on PS3) and really they built a Engine to create a World (Africa) that looks nearly Real.
You see at one Place in Backround the Kilimandscharo, you see Water,Rivers and Seas,Dunes and Sandstorms,Deserts and Rocks/Hills also you see WildFire in a Quality like never before.
I more pefere the Player Handling and Combat in Cryengine2 but Dunia combines Player Handling,World/Object Detail and Missionsystem very well.
For me this is the best looking Engine out now.But not used in the best Game out now
Dunia= Mission based Shooter in a large World.
CyEngine2=Combat (Physics) based Shooter in a large World.
I voted on Place3 Infinity Ward because that is,for me,the best Combat Engine out now.Absolute lagfree Gameplay and very very nice Graphics.
Also on Place3 should went Unreal Engine3 used in Frontlines-Fuel of War and Bioshock. Both are some of my Favos and the look absolute beautiful.
But i decided to vote Infinity Wad.Love CoD Series too much
Thanks for bringing back the lost Memory.

Re: What`s the best Game Engine
So many source fanboys. The engine needs a major, major revamp to keep up with the likes of CryEngine2, UE3, and Ronin. Still, I suppose a big part of what makes an engine great is the gameplay that comes out of that engine. Portal was good, I guess. IMO Garry's mod is a waste of time (though I think it's actually meant to be a time waster
). HL2 is still very frustrating (just got the the striders after leaving the game alone for a few weeks). If source got a boost in the visuals department I'd be more impressed, but I dunno -- with so many people talking about how great it is why wouldn't they take the time to update it for future titles?

Rebellion all the way, baby!
Hey, let's see how you feel when the entire Alliance fleet you've been beating the tar out of in the Core finally builds up long enough to decide they're taking Coruscant and they have the troops to back it up.

Boy, you need some source mods, that's gameplay for you.
Even though I don't know first hand, I would put CryEngine over Source. A few videos can show you how good it is. Not sure how scripted events work in Cry as opposed to Source though.
So the only engines I know anything about:
1. CryEngine
2. Source
3. Zero

Oh, it's the BEST not FAVE... Still Ronin and Zero. Zero is simple, but it works out near perfectly for shooters such as the Battlefronts.

Here's hoping the release mod tools for Lord Of The Rings: Conquest. Then we'll get to see what next-gen Zero can do.

Re: What`s the best Game Engine
Very good point there. Source and CryEngine 2 are the ones I picked, I know most of the systems on the poll list but those two are my favorites without picking a thirdCaleb1117 wrote:Teancum wrote:So many source fanboys. Re: What`s the best Game Engine
I've played some of the source mods (not a lot). It's just me I'm sure, but Garry's mod got old for me quickly. To me a physics playground does not equal good gameplay. I've never been a fan of Counter Strike, and I've already voiced my distaste with HL-esque gameplay. I dunno, I need something on that engine that appeals to me to make a fair judgement.

Re: What`s the best Game Engine
I gave Insurgency and D.I.P.R.I.P. a shot, and neither were good at all. Insurgency basically feels like any other online FPS except 1) you die in like two shots 2) the only way to distinguish between allies and enemies is by shooting them to death and then seeing if you got a kill or a tk 3) No reticule makes aiming w/o ironsights near impossible. And D.I.P.R.I.P. was just garbage. I haven't tried Synergy or GM though.Teancum wrote:I've played some of the source mods (not a lot). It's just me I'm sure, but Garry's mod got old for me quickly.
